Dear long pips friends

The following is the result of long lasting tests and a sort of summary of these tests with long pips. I often tried and played different long pips and was never totally happy with my equipment. So I began to study this stuff closer. I measured all pips: geometry, distances, tackiness, springiness, aspect ratio and so on. I hoped to read much into understanding the abilities of the pimples. But these helped not very much. So I decided to test all long pimples at the ball machine.

Great Job.

Wow, this is impressive. I'm surprised that CTT National Pogo did not make any of the "recommended" lists. I would have thought it would have made the "allaround game with blocking and attacking strokes" list.

Fantastic effort! I just wished it would have been done before - would have saved me some money :D On the other hand, it is kind of fun to test an conclude... Now I just have to test all those rubbers you found good for chopping

Wow! Epic project and useful information.

Of course, since the majority of these were tested with sponge, the properties in OX could be quite different. Very good info for sponge players though.

OX on slower and softer blades is perfect in my eyes. On faster and harder blades tacky pimples need spong.

Just a questions... for the "blade / rubber combos" you list some rubbers as very grippy and some as not grippy. The very grippy are on fast blades, the ungrippy on slow blades.

What does the grip refer to? I notice you have Giant Long as a very grippy pip for fast blades, but giant long soft (which has the same topsheet but has a dampening sponge) as very ungrippy. Can you explain what they refers to please?

I measured the grip like on the following picture. I increased the angle an stopped when the plate began to move. I made this procedure with two weigth (250 g / 1000 g) and found out, that there can be a big difference between the gip of the surface (lower weigth) and the grip of the necks (higher weigth). I caculated the average of the two measurements.

I also measured the aspect ratio of each covering. There is quite a differece between the topsheet of the Giant Long and Giant Long Soft.

Giant Long has an aspect ratio of 1,1 (1,6/1,4) and a thicker ground layer (0,4 mm).
Giant Long Soft has an aspect ratio of 1,1 (1,7/1,6) and a thinner ground layer (0,3 mm).

I think the thinner ground layer of the Giant Long Soft make the difference.

Wow very interesting way of measuring martinspin... you continue to impress me!

I'm surprised there is such a difference in aspect ratio of those 2 rubbers. Since they only have a single ITTF approval for this rubber, you'd have to wonder if it's just lack of quality control...

Hey Alex

Sorry, the grip of the Giant Long Soft is lower but not so much. It was a mistake by me and I corrected it. Thanks for your input :)

OX on slower and softer blades is perfect in my eyes. On faster and harder blades tacky pimples need spong.

This may be true in some cases, but Tibhar Grass D.Tecs in OX and on a hard blade is widely considered the most disturbing pip there is at the table, while with sponge you rate it as equally disturbing as the relatively harmless Tibhar Extra Long. :o

Another highly disruptive pip in OX is Bomb Talent, which was rated as one of the lowest in disturbance with sponge.

So while I'm sure your findings are valid when using sponge, in my opinion I don't think they can be accepted as accurate for OX players.

Your are right. OX or spong depends on the rubber, blade and style. Some rubbers like the D.TecS can be played in OX at every distance and other long pimples need spong. I think D.TecS is an exception under the long pimples coverings :D
