I recently started chopping as I got a cheap BTY Matsushita Pro. I put a D09C on FH and Yinhe Neptune (0.7) on BH.
Nice feeling, light and good consistency.

I got another TSP Curl-P1r (0.3-0.7) and tested on my BH. Man my chops just went out of the line. Return is high and hard to control.

My questions:
1 - I thought thinner sponge offers better control? It seemed the other way around for me. I thought P1r is the best LP.
2 - a guy I beat before just kept giving backspin to my BH. When chopped with LP, my return had no spin. He then killed the shot. I watched Filus who returned short backspin with LP. His return seemed very spinny. How does he do that?

Thank you

Sorry for asking very basic questions

Hi,

A couple of things here ..

Recently started chopping .. This would be underlying sub-text... Before reading each point, keep referring to this..

- There's nothing like the best LP or inverted, or blade.. etc etc... Whatever equipment suits your game is the best ... TSP P1-r is an effective LP (In the right hands), but not for a beginner.. Can't blame the rubber, if you don't have the necessary skills to use it ..

- It's not necessarily true that Thinner or no sponge LPs offers better control.. Yes, they may offer better reversal or deception. However, you get less of a cushion to absorb the opponent's attacks , due to less/lack of sponge, and a more direct contact with the blade's wood, which can make the ball fly off the table.

- Neptune is a more beginner-friendly rubber..

- Unlike you, Ruwen Filus has not started chopping recently.. He's got to where he is, after putting in years of practice, honing his skills..

Agree 100% with ootbs.

Also you blade matters tremendously in LP play. There are general principles, but it is also related to what you train yourself to do.

Learning LP play is a LONG experience. Take your time. Master skills one at a time.

Thank you for your information.

Can you at least point me to the right direction? I practice returning backspin. But the ball always ends up with just no spin.

With P1-r 0.5mm its hard to push with good spin vs push. I find it easier with 1.0mm. If you don't want no-spin you really have to get under the ball, brush and get the pimples bending. Another way is to twiddle to inverted when pushing, then you have a nice variation when pushing with pimples and no spin.

I think Filus still uses FL3 1.0mm which is easier to generate spin on pushes with.

Yes, I'm an LP player, and I face the same challenge.. There're a couple of options, that I can think off..

1. Twiddle and chop/push with your inverted side..
2. With the LP, play a roll type of a shot..
3. Push Hard forward and upwards..
4. Play a slice type of a stroke, putting a lot of wrist into it..

If you want to push (Like you would with inverted) the ball back, then practice controlling the height, and placement of the ball

Thank you.
I have practiced twiddling just not fast enough in recovery.

What do you mean a roll type of shot?

A roll is a sort of a pseudo-top-spin action.. It's kind-of a lifting action. So, rather than pushing a backspin ball, you lift it with an open racket face, and send the spin back (as topspin). If the opponent sends a deep backspin ball your way, you can step back a bit, and roll it .. This'll send back a topspin.

The above is my definition of a roll .. Others may beg to differ.
