Yes, 979 is the only LP I've seen that is vertically aligned.

What puzzles me is the picture ITTF has on its equipment page (http://www.ittf.com/_front_page/ittf1.a ... ory=rubber). It shows that the pips are horizontally aligned. Are there 2 different versions of 979?

I thought that two different companies made them, one under the Globe name and one under Xiying. Never having played the rubbers, I'm not sure of the properties of each and if there's a difference or not.

XY979 is a hard lp which works great on a soft blade, good for block, slow in defence and fast when active in attack, also very accurate in use.

For me, it's the only rubber that can replace old Grass D.TecS ox is Globe 979 ox on JSHyuk blade...

I think Globe 979 is a lot faster than Xying 979. I've not used the latter (but have read of its properties from others here), but the Globe was quite quick from memory.

The red sheet I have was poor for chopping but one of the best for attacking, not enough backspin when chopping for me to use, however these vary from sheet to sheet and it might be that I got a fast one.....
edit:sorry mine was a xying not Globe

Anyone know anything about older versions of the globe 979? I got a sheet today from a shop that sells old stock found here and there. While the rubber plays quite well surprisingly it is horizontally aligned. The label area is similar to recent versions but the 979 lettering is clearly thinner.

I recently tried the globe 979 ox red coming from 388d ox red and the rubber is an easy transision I thought after a fairly intense practice session where it gave a lot of problems to a heavy spin server so I went into a team match with it with high hopes .After the first match I realised it is a little faster than the 388d with less control and less reversal and I switched back to the 388d for the next two games, this was a good time to try something new as it was a handicap match where it would have been really difficult for us to lose

And 888, 888-II and Mo Wang II have the "vertical" alignment. Weird.

The 979 pips are bigger than my GD Talon and Cropcircles, might be fattest long pips of all.
