Since I got these samples from Donic for testing, I needed to write it up formally: Review of the Donic Spike P1 and Spike P2

In a nutshell, they are high quality (made in Japan) grippy long pimple best suited to classic / modern defensive players, although they are quite suitable for close-in active play as well.

if anyone would like to try one of my test sheets (OX), let me know, and you can add your thoughts here as well.

I don't understand why they copy those pips: at least when it concerns a European company. Invest in something new, something better. This might be the case, but I highly doubt it.

I also find it disappointing those pips don't come in 1,5mm.

I don't think they're copied at all, but simply designed to perfectly fit those 2 Donic sponsored players.

I mean with copy trying to emulate the effect of those two rubbers. Not an exact copy, off course.

I doubt these pips are designed with the help of these two defenders. Octopus was also designed with the help of Chen Weixing. He never used it in competition.

Just think of it: what's wrong with P1-R (for Wang) or P4 (for Shiono)? They won fantastic games with it and became well-known defenders using it.

Off course we can still ask Shiono in an interview about this. (just to find a reason to have another interview with him)

According to a German player with TTR 1450 (rather moderate level) there is no difference between Curl P4 and Donic P2. Here's what he said:

Quote:
I played p4 for about 6 month and then i played spike p2 for 2 month, both with 0.5 sponge. Imho there is absolut no difference. Same soft pimples and the same ultra soft sponge.

I'm not surprised by that.

I will be able to test the Donic Spike P1 1.0 mm soon, probably on Wednesday. FH will be Donic Bluefire JP02 and blade will be Donic Defplay Senso...

i have used TSP p1r for 6years, what is a very good long pimple, but i always troubled with the p1r throw angle when the attack came to my body or wide on my backhand, i noticed then i only can my chops give back little higher (when i not in perfect position)
i try Spike p1, and its a dream.
little bit lower throw (not as low like feint long 2)
and very similar pimple top sheet, very similar spin and playing character, the throw angle is perfect for me.

what the difference vs tsp p1r?

spike p1 have very very littlebit harder pimple.
spike p1 have thinner sponge (i play 1-1.3mm i think spike have 1mm and p1r usually somewhere in between 1 and 1.3)
spike have very very little bit softer sponge that the p1r
and spike lighter what is very good for me because my bat always have weight problem.
spike p1 cut: 31gramm tsp p1r red cut: 33-34 black: 35-36 (cutted in Donic defplay senso)
i dont know why but the black tsp p1r always a little bit heavier.
i tryed the p1 in black color.

so its the best pimple for me right now.
i can make so many good quality chop with spike! good job donic !

ITS A BEAST !

I tried Spike P1 (1.1-1.3) on BTY Joo Se Hyuk. It feels similar to Curl P1r indeed, unfortunately, it appeared having less control and spin reversal and was not really good at attack.

Has anyone tested the Donic Spike P2 in the 1.0-1.3 sponge? The only feedback I've seen has been the OX or 0.3-0.6 versions. I am very interested to see how the thicker sponge performs vs. Feint Long III in its ability to generate spin and to chop at a distance. I've been thinking of pulling the trigger on this rubber but I'm a little hesitant without any feedback.

Haggisv, I feel you are the best person to ask seen as though you have tested these rubbers.

My club has recently acquired discount on Donic equipment. My team mate uses Feint long 3 in 1.1mm sponge and feels he needs a new sheet. What we want to know, prior to going to get a new sheet of Feint 3 at full price, is how similar are Spike P2 and Feint long 3? Because then he can decide on getting the P2 instead for half the price.
