As an LP player I play angled shots as a primary part of my game, but there are times when I find playing angles is more advantageous than others. There's nothing much more delightful as playing a really short angle to say, the opponents FH and then quickly switching the return to a short angle to their BH leaving them trying to negotiate the table to get to the ball only to see it hit the floor  I did this today to a friend (and yeah he did complain it wasn't a friendly act  ). It made me think about how often I do play angled shots and who I do play them to, and who I avoid, or am more selective about playing angles to. One type of player is the quick young spinny looper as so often a ball falling over the side of a table (especially on their FH) comes back as a quick whipped spinny loop to my own FH that's incredibly hard to block. Fortunately, I don't play a lot of this type of player. I would say I use angles quite a lot but still within a broader game strategy, but I am always looking for the good angled shot that will either win the point or lead to a winner.

Feel free to discuss how angles come into your game strategy, if they do.

And just to clarify what I mean by angles, if anyone is unclear, I am generally talking about putting the ball wide to either side of the table with the pips, which is often accompanied by a drop shot within the shot, aiming to keep the ball short, although short balls are not the only domain of a good angled shot.

I look forward to see how the poll turns out and the discussion that hopefully arises in this thread.

I am currently in #1 option, but ideally would like to be at #3. Feels like totally untapped area for me.

I play the angles if available to me. Also jamming them at the elbow also produces a lot of opportunities.

When I play double inverted, I tend to play angles much more often than I do with the pimples. Probably because my main focus with the pimples is to get the ball long, plus angles don't really help me when chopping.

At the table punch blocking left and right. A big part of my game.

It really depends on the player. Some players are quick, and my angles will give them angles, which can get me into trouble. ;)

My focus with the pimples is usually more about keeping the ball out of their hitting zone, so that I can attack strong myself.

Agreed. Depends on the player's agility and abilities when they get there. Never any point to give an opponent an advantage even if its part of your normal strategy...you always have to respond to the opponents game if they are beating yours. Then of course, sometimes there's just nothing that turns the game your way ;(

Not a lot of my game is at the table, so really, I only play angles on serve return if the opportunity is right.
