When it comes down to good ol' fashion slams... is there any long pip that can function anywhere close to the level of short pips in that regard? Something that can blast through spin, with a good amount of speed?

The reason I ask is... I've been using short pips for the smashes (forehand) -- they work very well, obviously, for that. However, my problem comes in the form of an old herniated disc. And it seems that the forward torque/rotation that comes with smashing has been aggravating my lumbar section as of late. Looping doesn't seem to bother me too much there, as I tend to do more of the leftward bending rather than the forward twisting (brush loops).

So I was thinking of perhaps doing a more block oriented game on the forehand, but still be equipped with some put-away power when needed. Should I just stick with short pips, maybe with thinner sponge or less spin, and angle block (He Zhi Wen style), or... go to long pips for some more disruption, but still have the ability to slam home a winner? Is there a real night and day difference when smashing between SP and LP?

The short pips do seem to fit my playing style, and as a result my forehand involvement has become much more frequent! I've been using the Joola Ultra Express in max sponge for reference. To me, that rubber is VERY spinny!

My experience is that LP smashes are deadly, and don't need as much power, but are harder to control. A LP with plenty of sponge is easier to smash with - eg FL3 1.3 or 1.5, or Feint AG if you really want to be aggressive.

A player at my club uses DtecS in OX, and has a very effective angled FH kill with his pips... doesn't use much power, and doesn't have great mobility.

All depends on your style and ability. There's a player at my club who uses LP Ox on his FH and his smashes are deadly. And he doesn't just hit the odd one, he hits them frequently (like every time he likes the look of a ball to his FH, usually with some underspin on it :P ). I've seen him use a few different LP with it too, and the type of LP doesn't seem to matter. Before he used LP he used Anti, and he changed to LP because the Anti smashes weren't as deadly. And of course with LP you can play chops and other touch shots that don't work as well with SP.

I agree with both. Look at this video, this guy is the king of LP smashing...he only needs moderate speed. He uses ox TSP Curl P2., this LP has very thick pips.
