Hello Folks,

Been playing for two years seriously with lessons and all that jazz. Started off as an attacker but now for a year been playing with Dr. Neubauer Super Block on BH. It's been working out. I just chop block and push with BH and smash with FH. I'm looking for a BH substitute.

What I'm looking for:

1. slow/dead,
2. good reversal,
3. close to frictionless, and
4. cheap.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Gus_goose

Super Block was an amazing rubber and definitely not the easiest to replace,

The question is are you open to Anti-Loops? There are some amazing frictionless anti-loops that are designed to replace the frictionless long pips, and there legal!

The Dr does several:
here is an example of his latest:
viewtopic.php?f=17&p=338546

I am also doing a post on here comparing frictionless Long Pips to Frictionless anti-loops I'm using Super Block OX (no sponge) as the frictionless Long Pips.

The Dr's Anti-Loops will tick all your boxes apart from the cheap one :D however there great quality and the durability is fantastic so base it on how long they last do they really work out that expensive?

Alternatively there are some great slow LP (with friction) on the market that have great disruptive effect but they won't be like Super Block, a couple the Dr does that would tick most your boxes are Viper, Gangster, Number 1 & Desperado (there are alto more)

Hope this has helped a little,
Dark Arts TT

Oh wow whoa! I never really thought of anti rubber. I was hardcore EJ-ing for awhile and I think looking for an anti substitute might trigger a relapse. But still thinking...

As for LPs, what about CTT Pogo? Pips design seems very similar, smooth etc..., spray on some armor all and there you go?

I'm going to play with Super Block until I start playing a league. Even just in open play someone asked me if my pips were legal. I showed him the ITTF stamp. I think that's a fine response on my part. Honestly I just want to play people and truth is if they could beat me with other rubber, they could beat me with Super Block. I played a 2,000 level guy and he demolished me to the point of tears, don't think he cared what rubber I was playing.

Hi gus-goose,

I know the feeling its easy to get lost in testing all different options,

unfortunately i have never used CCT Pogo, but i do know a few players who "treat" there bat, and i know a couple who still use super block, personally i have no argument with it it comes down to how good the player is not the bat, the only thing i would advise against it is if your caught with it what would happen, if your just in a league for a bit of fun and not a serious player there shouldn't be too much os an issue but that all comes down to the person in charge of your league and the mood they are in  however if your playing at a higher level in regular tournament or even sponsored then the penalties for getting caught could be a lot higher, personally i would advise to just use a legal set up then theres no chance/ worry of being caught :D

there are some great set ups out there just do some research into them, the buffalo i use has such a hard feel it feels like playing with super block no sponge  it suits my game great, the newer rhino has an amazing effect too, on the pips side there are some great long pips with devastating effects, Viper & Desperado have some great wobble and effect along with lots of others.

Hi Dark Arts,

So how does the sponge work on Buffalo? For close-to-the-table play, do I want the thinnest sponge or is it the opposite (dampening sponge)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The thinnest sponge gives the best reversal, but thicker sponge can take off the pace better due the dampening sponge.
If you use a fast blade, you might need the thicker sponge to absorb the pace, but for a slower blade the thin sponge might work better due to much better reversal.
Blades with a harder out layer tends to aid reversal as well. From the Dr N range, most of the blades are designed for high reversal. For non-balsa blades I liked the Jackpot, not that fast and a hard feel and good reversal.

Hi haggisv,

Thanks for the advice. How slow is the Butterfly Joo Sae Hyuk blade? Is that what I should be using or maybe a Dr. Neubauer blade?

I like the feel of Joo Sae Hyuk, I feel it slower than other blades I used but don't know if it's the gold standard for push blockers. I also use a custom blade from Japanese site World Rubber Market, that blade is as slow as JSH maybe more and a little bigger.

Now that I'm a full time push blocker trying to get ideal setup. This thread got me thinking about anti-spin rubber, so might as well inquire about my blade too.

The Joo Sae Hyuk blade is one of the fastest defensive blades.

That's interesting. I don't know any real defensive players. I got Joo Sae Hyuk because someone told me a local chopper used it. My only other comparison is the Stiga Clipper I used when playing offensively.

Any suggestions for a slow big def blade under $100 for use with either LPs or anti for push blocker close to the table?

Hi gus-goose,

Regarding the anti, I use the buffalo 1.8mm never been disappointed with the spin reversal effect, on the blade I use it with its very slow, I have also used the 1.2mm version too, personally I prefer the 1.8mm ass the added control and speed reduction to the little about of spin reversal lost is worth it any day however despite the thick 1.8mm with the buffalo being so hard it's the closest feeling to super block no sponge I have come across, the Bison and Rhino are great they produce a little more effect but are a little softer so they don't feel like a hard bat

As a first one I would say go with the thicker one as the antis are harder to play than the frictionless Long Pips so you will be thankfull for the slower and more controllable 1.8mm

Blade wise i use the Dr N Barricade, ultra slow combine it with a 1.8mm anti and you have a fortress of defence the blade is very reasonably priced too! It's also very light with the blade only weighing 52-55 grams.

That would be the most controlled set up the maximum effect set up would be
1.2mm anti with Hercules, jackpot or matador however I have recently tried the 0.6mm gorilla on the Jackpot blade WOW that was the best effect I have come across even better than super block itself! Plus the sound it made sounds like a cracked ball  but that set up is very difficult to control due to the speed but I will say it's the most controlled gorilla 0.6mm has been it works in harmony with Jackpot, but I definitely don't recommend that as your first anti set up

^^whats the kung fu blade like-just bought one for £20-im a close to the table anti blocker using best anti in 1.8mm to block loops off the bounce.
donic defplay senso is amazing for this anti-throw angle is very low.

Hi Peter Pong,

Kung Fu blade is nice blade rated ALL- speed wise, it has a good dampening effect when blocking and adds considerable effect to Anti/Pips, also quite good blade for a controlled spin game it can sometimes lack the power when away from the table or for a flat kill shot, but if your close to the table blocker you will love it, I have it with a 1.8mm Bison on and it's a great combination! (I primarily use the Barricade blade as you can block anything with that )

^^^barricade blade also sounds good as i do a lot of chopping.
throw angle on defplay is so good though with Nittaku Best Anti in 1.8.
the kung fu also has a small head-i have cut the defplay down as i dont really like the oversized head for the f/h
