Post subject:  Considering P-1R alternatives

Hi guys,
Quick background... been using P1R for 1.5 years, mostly in 0.5 thickness. I don't switch equipment often and I have not tried a lot of LPs. I am slowly beginning to realize that I need a bit more control (rated 2050+ in a local league, for reference) and I also would like to slow it down just a tiny bit to compensate for the hard/fast blade JSH.

With that said, I am thinking FL2 in 0.5

Can someone confirm that it is: slower, has more control, etc compared to P1R?

Thanks

No, FL2 is not slower than P1r...and control is a bit better than Curl...
Sauer Troger Hellfire with sponge is slower than both... with good control and it is ''dangerous''

Thanks but I won't be trying out gazillion different rubbers.. interested only in all-around pips similar to p1r -- fl2, maybe octopus.

Do you want more control in handling the fast loops, or is it for other aspects of your game? If you want more control against fast loops, a thicker sponge might actually help, as it can absorb the pace better and does not bottom out as easily.

I used to use P-1R when I chopped more (as opposed to blocking), and I also found it wanting in the control department sometimes. The best control for chopping that I ever experienced was actually with the Spinlord Agenda OX rubber, but since it's OX, you do give up a bit of spin variation, i.e., capacity to generate your own spin.

Yes, I think FL2 in 0.5 is quite easy to play (clearly easier than 1.0). For me Agenda 1.0 (maybe 0.5) has good control in JSH also. FL3 is slower alternative, or p4 0.5.

I think the choice depends of if you only chop or if you block and attack. If you are used to P1r 0.5, any other rubbers might be hard to adjust... If you know other pip player, ask them rubbers to borrow - every pip player has large pile of discarded rubbers.

For the sake of terminology, I think that rubbers like Hellfire are more "allround" pips than P1r, which is more of an choppers pips.

I need to get around to actually posting some parcels.... as I've promised rubbers to a few folk on here - apologies for the delay!

OP: I have a sheet of FL2, Black, 0.5mm. You're welcome to it.

Yep...

I got used to the rubber, especially when chopping in "predictable" multiball drills and in slow looping rallies. Even then the margin of error is quite high and the chop needs to be textbook perfect.
Once the speed of the loop increases to a third ball/power loop level, I successfully return only a very small percentage of such loops, perhaps due to the sponge bottoming out.

Yes I am an aggressive chopper .. I block only when I get caught near the table and I have a power loop coming at me.

As far as trying out rubbers, I did try my coach's rubber yesterday (he's also a chopper and uses P1R 1.0) I felt it was lacking control. I could probably play with it if I decided to stick with it for a few weeks, but I think overall I enjoy a thinner sponge more.

FL2 0.5 isnt similar to P1.r 0.5mm

u should try joola octopus 0.5mm (its P1r clone)
but octopus has more control

I will look into it. I am not looking for a magic solution really - I just want to try a more forgiving "chopper's" LP

The question is -- is it slower/softer than P1r?

Maybe Curl P4?
Edit: Octopus is basically a P1-R that's more forgiving from what I've read about it, so I guess I second it as well.

+1 for Octopus...
P4 also ...it is softer...both good..

Okay... so after playing several more matches today and doing some more research I went ahead and ordered Curl P4 in 0.5 and Joola Octopus also in 0.5. I decided against FL2, after reading that it’s quite similar to the 388d1 which was my learning LP. Also I decided not to deviate too much from P1R, the rubber I know so well. Who knows maybe I will stick with P1R after all. I will report back once I get the rubbers.

I"ve also seen the internet reports where fl2 is like 388d-1 but they`re nothing like each other to me,the pips are much harder on the fl2 and the rubber base is thicker hence less effects in ox version,I`d take the 388d-1 all day long in ox.A high level vet that I`ve practised with uses Octopus very well, you could be onto something there
