At club level Attack them with short or medium pips! Lots of pace and deception but not a lot of spin to be reversed.

Move fast and do the no spin hits to the left. Worst players to play against! I would prefer a 2200 looper to an 1800 flat hitter any day. Especially if the 1800 hitters throw medium height balls to my left making me constantly make decisions on whether to turn and hit with my forehand or continue to play corner to corner, etc...

There is some good advice in the video for sure! However the language is a bit provocative (and I'd guess probably not intended as English not his first language?).

At all but the highest levels advice to topspin absolutely everything vs lps is suicide! (Not sure if that is being advised or whether it is topspin is at all possible).

Very good illustration of tactics in the match, definitely adaptable to lower levels if your 3rd ball is good...suspect the chicken wing would come into play though!

I think the clip unnecessarily over-complicates things. Its simpler just to remember if u put backspin it comes back with no-spin and if you attack it comes back with backspin. Greg Lett's clip is accurate and fun:


The OP's clip should actually be called "Its easy to play against long pimples". Of course, if a player uses long-pimples and is better than you then you will lose, but you shouldnt lose BECAUSE of the long pimples.

When playing with pips, I enjoy playing vs double inverted players, as long as I keep the ball on the table, eventually they will make an unforced error or pop the ball up for an easy attack.

She is ineffective vs tt players wearing a baseball catcher's shin guards.

There are examples of elite pro level players with exceptional results with long pips (look no further than Joo Sae-Hyuk). If there was a way to win against them easily, everyone would be beating them with a little training.

You can basically break down LPs into three categories (to my knowledge): low friction/frictionless, grippy, high grip. Low friction/frictionless continues the direction of the ball rotation but cannot really add any of its own spin, grippy LPs allow the player to reduce or add to incoming spin, and high grip LPs give the player near total control over spin manipulation (can put decent spin on a dead ball and kill the spin of a heavy spin ball) but don't continue the direction of the ball rotation much, if at all. Bunching all pips together is a mistake many players I've come across make. Even when I used short pips, most players didn't understand the difference between long and short. Being honest, I used to bunch all LPs together before I did the research.

Lower level LP blockers though can be frustrating to play against though. In my opinion, they tend to rely too heavily on the LPs to wobble the ball and/or reverse spin. A lot of the tips and tricks floating around (no giving too much spin for the LP to reverse etc.) apply to this kind of player.

The other factor obviously is... how good is the rest of a player's game? I use my LPs perhaps ~33% of the time in a match. Frankly my use of them is poor. I twiddle a lot though, and I'm a capable looper on both wings.

This way I can overcome the weaknesses of LPs and counter any anti-LP tactics. Still doesn't mean I win every match though, does it...

Also, despite using Inv/LPs just like me, our league's classical defender has an entirely different set of weaknesses/strengths to me and often loses to different players than me.

There's certainly no "one size fits all" approach to LPs, in the same way that there isn't for playing double inverted players.

i think he talked to a certain public. The Pro or high rating guy. The one that can maintain strong loop against defender. For us you need to vary the spin and the shots. The defense is also not a pro so pushing sometime when the underspin is strong can be good as our defender struggle with going back and forth from the table and their attack is often not so stable. Doing a good push is quite faisible for us.
