This thread is nearly a year old, and has contributions from I think 13 out of 4371 members (no idea how many of the 4371 members are active). haggisv's original post gave the reason for the change proposed being the current names are boring and the post count not being particularly relevant.

I agree they are boring. But most things become boring overtime. And a good marketing trick is to change a title and call it "new and improved" to spark an interest / renew an interest.

My questions would be, what was the original intention of having titles reflective of the number of posts someone has made and do these titles serve any purpose to forum users. If so what are they? If we know how they benefit users, or the purpose they serve then it will be easier to discuss what would be the most appropriate titles - if any.

I like the idea of a custom title after a certain post count (regardless if others think that what one particular person has to say is less important than what another person has to say but the other person post's less frequently ) hahaha I hope you understand,

The problem seems that there are a few forum members who have been on here for a long time or have high amount of posts and do not want a custom Title for their own reason

I'm thinking say instead of "super user" maybe "Golden Oak" (over 1000) ? etc downwards Silver Birch ? Bronze sapling new acorn

I think the current ones are kinda boring, too....I like the whole acorn, sapling, oak tree thing.

Here's me suggestion:

0-49: acorn
50-99: seedling
100-199 (maybe 299): sapling
200 (or 300)-499: oak tree
500+: golden oak

I think the number of posts, and associated title, is a measure of how long you've been around and some indication of knowledge experience.

Of course we would always value quality over quantity, but since quality is hard to measure and often subjective, quantity is still an indicator of the members experience on the forum. The longer members are around and the more the post and read, they do grow in experience, so having some indicator of experience is still a lot better than nothing. For new users, you would likely value the opinion of members with 500 posts over one with only a couple of post, so there is some value there.
The other value is of course to award a new title to members that have contributed more... and since we can't measure quality easily, quantity will have to do. We reserve the custom titles for showing extra appreciation for members that make a great contribution already, so the automatic title / icon award is just an extra bonus.

I think the whole tree thing has a nice ring to it and is something unique about OAK - it would also be something else that's One of A Kind - who else would use it? (Maybe a tree forum? :P ). Of course being a TT forum, this brings in another aspect we could use which is the types of woods and their values in blades. Now it would (excuse the pun  ) be a little arbitrary on the values placed on each wood but we could have something like:

0 - 50: Cypress
50-100: Balsa
100-200: Walnut
200-500: Birch
500-1000: Hinoki
1000+ Golden Oak

A slight variation on what's been suggested already, but a little more TT flavour. Suggestions on what the wood names should be can come from others (eg. Ross Leidy) as I'm no expert in wood grading.

I like Reb's latest idea.

So is anyone against such "outlandish" titles?

So, we're really talking about something else now. I think the current default tags, like New Member, Senior Member and Super User are fine. I just thought in a moment of egotism that a special banner could be included for those nutters with more than 1000 posts. I'll let it be for now ... ;(

Hey, I know it sounds defensive, but keep it up-everybody knows those of us who play with DEF blades are the most highly evolved (or is it most opinionated?)...
add
5000-9999 DEF +
10000-99999 DEF
100000 DEF-

Perhaps a little more reddish (earlier one looked a bit pinkish):

I think it solves the problem of finding other words to fit the title. So basically you could have:

:*: OOAK NUT! 1000+
:*: OOAK NUT! 2000+
:*: OOAK NUT! 3000+

ad infinitum ...
