Post subject:  Subforums in the Techniques section - how do you vote?

In one of the discussions on this forum it was proposed to create some subforum in the "Table Tennis Coaching, Techniques & Strategies" section, to break it down into different styles.
When you play a certain style, it can be very hard to find specific information on technique, or the basic strokes that are effective for this style. This is even more true for the less conventional styles. Most style have some unique aspects that are worth discussing and could be highly valuable to players wanting to learn or improve in this style

Many of these styles are related to the equipment used, but some are styles of play can be played with a variety of equipment. Proposed subsections are:

LP Push/Blocking
LP Chopping
LP Attacking
Classical Antispin Techniques
Frictionless Antispin Techniques
Short Pimple techniques
Inverted chopping
Inverted Retrieving
Inverted Looping
Inverter Blocking

We've currently got 2 subforums under technique, which have had no activity for about a year, so I suspect the people that run the coaching sites probably won't miss it... will they?

I propose we remove the current 2 subforums (merge the posts into the main section) or move them, and create subforums under Techniques for the styles mentioned above.
I can see no harm in trying the new sections, and there is plenty of potential upside! Any existing threads related to these styles can be moved (or copied) into these sections. I'm going to need some help to do this though.

Please vote if you like the idea, or suggested any other improvement for this idea. If you have further ideas of other styles we might add, please post them here as well.

Yes, I think it's a great idea, but if and ONLY if people post enough in them!

I think that then, if people want EQUIPMENT advice for a certain type, they know where to look, and then there's a separate place for TECHNIQUES with that equipment.

But you didn't get short pips!

To tell you the truth it seems good but on the other hand I don't care, because I don't browse the forum by sections. I just use "View unread posts" :)

I think it's good because it makes it easier for players with similar styles to share notes and help each other. This is particularly important for players who don't play conventional styles because these days there are very few table tennis coaches who teach anything other than double-inverted looping.

Short pips added.

Yes you're right, it will only be useful if people post there, although if some us us would look around we'd probably already find a lot of related content... but it's all over the place.

I'll try to make an effort to post more on these individual forums.

Yes, thanks for adding short pips!

And...The whole idea is great! More focused learning will be possible!

What about the majority of people on this forum who don't fit in to any of these categories - are you saying they need to look elsewhere for coaching tips or that the same reasons for wanting "specialist" sections don't apply to them? What about counter hitters, loopers, aggressive spin attack players.

This could dilute the forum more or it could reward those who want to learn more which seems to be the "specialist" players who post more too. Only 8 people have voted but there are 10 categories already. Less than one person per category.

I've a feeling only one or two of these categories will actually receive any regular input and having categories with no or little posts. Time will tell.

The bigger problem I have with the techniques section is what is it actually for? Actually asking for technical advice, or sharing playing experiences, or being proactive and giving advice unsolicited?

Good point. I think I should rename the catagories a little, to make it clear that it refers more to effective strokes for a particualar setup or style, not a complete style that a person must try and fit themselves into.

If I use myself as an example  , I would fit myself into at least 4 catagories, being (1) looping for forehand with inverted (2) Long Pimple push/blocker (3) Long Pimple Chopper (4) Long Pimple Attacker.

So if I rename the styles to actual strokes, it may make more sense.

I would think the catagory would be valid for any type of discussion, including Q&A. It would be more useful to people that don't regularly use the 'Active Topics' link, and want to read all discussions related to specific type of play.

EDIT: Catagory names updated.

What is the section for? To me, it represents a focused section for our styles of play. A place to ask questions, share strategies, get input from experts, etc. A section where technique information for your style will be easy to find. A section people with specific styles will always check.

Some sections will be more popular than others for sure.

I suggest for a style of play to qualify for a section we should require a special volunteer captain who promises to keep things active by posting various topics. If there is no volunteer to oversee the section, that section doesn't get added. That way no style is excluded and there will be no dead sections.

I don't see this as a dilution of the forum. Instead it's another interesting section to read regularly and refer back to over and over.

Now that's an excellent idea!

An excellent compromise - I agree with MNNB too.

I'll volunteer for the long pips blocking section.

Once I've gotten to a better level of play I'd be glad to volunteer for a section!

I certainly don't want to pressure anyone into putting up their hand for looking after one of these sections, but I don't think you need to be an expert to do so. As long as you've got an interest in the section, it's enough. It's just as useful to ask questions about the different aspect of the techniques... you don't have to have the answers. ;)
For those that put up their hands, I suggest you put a link to the subsection in your signature, and if you don't already have a custom title, I can put that you're manager of that section under your avatar. That should all help to attract more people with that style to the section.
