I know the issue of what should be in a PM vs what should be posted has been brought up a few times recently. This is my view on it, not a rule, just the way I see it... happy to discuss it further:

I think there are basically 2 types of threads, both perfectly acceptable in this forum, although most probably fall somewhere in between:

1. Serious equipment & technical discussions
- Here any posts should be kept to the point and on topic. Any hijacking should be avoided and put back on track. Obvious totally unrelated posts should either be deleted by mods, or be moved by the poster to another thread (for new discussions) if the information is useful (but not related)

2. Fun posts
These posts are there for less serious matters, so the guidelines should be a lot more relaxed... If the topic gets way off track, or gets totally hijacked by another poster, it can either be left as it is, or the original author can post to request to get back on topic...most people would respect this. No moderator action should be required 99% of the time...

I think most of the time this not a big deal, but if someone keeps posting stuff that really should be in a PM, it should be addressed...

I would add one nuance to this though. Even if you are addressing just one person in a post, if you want others to read it and possibly comment as well, put it in the thread. If you want to keep it strictly personal, obvious a PM is the only way to go. Don't ever assume that just because something is being directed at one person that others aren't interested as well. If we operated this way all the time, the forum would be a lot less interesting IMO!

It is pretty hard to judge sometimes what should or should not be in PM. In a way, I totally agree with Mr. Speedplay while on the other hand, Reb does have a point. At the end of the day, it is up to everyone to endeavour not to lead a thread astray.

Cheers.

Yes I agree Reb... it's more to avoid little personal conversation between 2 people within a thread... I agree that if there's a chance others might be interested, it's probably worth posting...

I sincerely appreciate you guys concern abt the PM or openly discussion in threads. Recently I posted a question( I have not chk for his response yet since i juz get home) to Dtop abt payment. Juz after I posted the message, I felt immediately that I actually should have communicated thr' PM to him.

Perhaps one other element: is it appropriate to use abbreviation in this forum? You might have noticed I have the habbits of using some abbreviation( such as juz for just etc)

Please let me know if it is considered as ill-mannered here to use abbreviation.
