hi folks!

i am looking for an alternative to the 802, because the 802 sometimes acts unpredictable leading to unforced errors. the sheet i am desiring, should be equally/similar in hardness or harder, should have little grip (=unaffected by spin) and should be similar or a bit slower in terms of speed..

1) any ideas besides spectol/spectol speed sponge? :Chop:

2) how do spectol/spectol speed sponge compare to 802?

DHS 651. Not tried 802, but I've a new sheet of 802.1 I've been trying it with. Slower, more down effect. There are various cheap version of 651 floating around with sponge from the glue era. get a good sheet from Japsko or similar

Double Fish 820A. The sponge is quite hard though, typical chinese type sponge. You can get a sheet for $5 at Eacheng. There is also a version with a soft sponge available in Europe but it did not test it.

Woah, woah, woah. Back the train up before you go buying another SP rubber.

You have to expand on that "unpredictable leading to unforced errors" comment. I want to hear more.

My first impression after hearing that? Could be a technique part on your end but who knows. Just would hate for you to spend more $ on another SP and what do you know??? Same "unpredictable leading to unforced errors" issues.

I think 802 is one of the more reliable, consistent rubbers around from what I've tried.

Okay fair enough. That blade must be awful fast for 1.5

Yes, it is.
By the way, I once applied 1 layer of Falco booster to the hard sponge and it felt much better (softer!) without adding too much speed. I really liked the blocking with the boosted version but hitting was also a little bit better.

I was experimenting with 837 1.0 orange sponge on the fh of my mats.pro and i found that it was hard to control for fh chops from far away. Most likely, it was my fault or just bad technique or bad position.

Then I started playing tonight at the club with a brand new sheet of 802 1.5 with orange sponge on a fast bomb blade...it was excellent in terms of control and just putting the ball on the table but no one really hit the ball hard on me but I did get alot of high floaters that stood up there for me to smash or to safely counter...

I'll probably lose a few points due to the speed of the blade but thats a risk I'm willing to take. The fast blade with 802 sp with 1.5 orange sponge allowed me to crack a few winners tonight with topspin style stroke.

I dont see any inconsistency in the rubber yet, however , I've only used it tonight, in houseleague and again it was excellent for fh topspin style strokes, chopping, blocking and serving. This rubber also has a lot of spin and you notice it during your service. You can see the ball curve in flight and I got a few freebies that I never would have with 837 1.0 on mats.pro which was slower but higher in throw. The bomb blade has a lower throw and can really attack with the pips.

A good, proven SP would be Stiga Clippper, but it may have more grip and speed than that you're looking for.

Did you ever try Milky Way Pluto? That's quite low spin.

thanks! does it feel comparably hard to the 802 though?

@julian - there was nothing wrong with the leopard so far, i only had chance to play with it once, currently i have ordered several sheets and will try them in the following days/weeks.

No it's not that similar to 802. Its main highlight is being insensitive to spin.
