Interesting. I hit a little this afternoon with Spectol on the backhand, and to my great surprise my regular old inverted backhand topspin drives were all going in. No adjustment needed. I didn't feel much difference between it and inverted until I tried a backhand loop, and then that ended up in the net.

So Spectol is "classic"? It certainly has been around since I was in high school and before (in the 1970s). I remember buying a sheet of it back then (that sheet was green!). Don't remember very much about it other than it was green.

I would have assumed that something that played like that would be "grippy". Which of the cheap Chinese short pips would compare closest to Spectol?

Iskandar

Now I am no SP expert, just starting on that journey, but do use spectol. I would say there is some adjustment vs BH topspin drives, but not too much. My research that made me choose Spectol as a starting point suggests that it is one of the best allrounders with characteristics in the middle; not too grippy but able to generate decent spin etc. , not too spin sensitive.

The method of generating spin seems quite different to me but is not easy to describe...... needing to keep the ball on the rubber for longer but not really use the sponge.

Which version speed ?

Where would the spinlord rubbers fall in the grippy vs classic sp debate? like degu, degu 2, waran, and gipfelstrum

Degu is soft, lots of spin, not much effect, lots of feeling. Degu II is the same topsheet but with slower sponge. Waran is much faster, but still has a lot of grip and spin. I've not tried Gipfelsturm, but I'd expect the family resemblance to be there. Basically all these Spinlord SPs are "modern", grippy shortpips, rather than traditional hard pips like 802 or 652.

Dolphin (purple sponge) is spinny, imo. Fat pips stacked closely together with check pattern on top. Fast and loop ok but little effect.

I'm new to pips and tt in general so I'm comparing to limited experience with Nittaku Mini (good effect) and Dr. Evil.

Question: if I want to hit through spin, is thinner or thicker sponge better? Which is less reactive?

Generally thinner is less reactive to incoming spin.. until bottom-out occurs at which time predicting ball path becomes difficult.

Wow, I have only just found this thread while looking for some feedback on Giant dragon Blast.
You don't half argue about some strange things.
Just for clarity and not because I am some sort of expert.
All ITTF approved rubbers are just approved on their topsheets.
There is no mention about sponge or not.
A Short pimple rubber is a rubber with short pips (there is probably a measurement to distinguish Short Pips from Medium pimple but I don't know it.)
Then there are Medium pips.
Then Long pips.

For many years I played with Winning NP1 (the old stuff before they changed the rules on aspect ratios or whatever it is called)
They are classed as a classic hard bat short pimple.
I put my own 2mm sponge underneath and they were brilliant.
Very short pimples shorter than the normal ones. Which meant it had brilliant control. I could do anything with these. From Chopping, Pushing topspinning, Looping and counter looping as well as the normal controlled blocking and chop blocking.
In their raw state they were a classic SP
And with sponge the best SP I ever used.
So the argument about whether certain SP rubbers should be in the opening listing is a rubbish argument.
You can use raw or do what you want with the ITTF approved SP (sponge or no sponge)

My problem now and the reason I haven't used SP for many years is I can't find any as good once they changed the rule on pimple.
What they call Winning NP1 now are s**t in comparison.
Anyway whoever started this thread it was a brilliant idea to list all SP rubber in a list.

Which now takes me to the reason I was looking.
Does anyone know anything about Giant Dragon Blast please?
Has anyone actually used it?

I'm currently trying a sheet of blast right now 2.15mm black. It's a lot of fun so far. Pretty hard sponge

Apart from Moristo SP, there is also Moristo SP Ax.
The difference is in the pip alignment.
Moristo SP has a vertical pip alignment and the Ax version horizontal alignment.

You're totally right. This topic deserves a separate thread since it's much easier to find them!
