Hi There. I'm relatively new to table tennis. Well, I've played a LOT of garage tt, but I'd say I'm a novice when it comes to "real" table tennis. I come from a high level tennis background, but have had to give up tennis due to knee injuries. I'm in rehab at the moment, but will buy a bat soon. Due to my knees, I want to move around as little as possible, which I'm guessing means playing close to the table? But I also want to be aggressive. Should I try short pips? Would short pips on the Yasaka Extra Gatien 3D be ok? Any advice welcome. Thanks!

Given that you have bung knees, want to stay close to the table and don't want to move around much then SP is well worth a try - perhaps give 802-40 a bash. I have heard good reports about your blade and I'm guessing it should be fine with SP.

I would also recommend getting a few lessons off a good coach. He will be in the best position to judge if SP suits you.

Thanks Carbonman. I definitely plan on getting some private lessons with a good coach when I'm back on my feet. Are there any short pips you would recommend?
Edit: sorry, just read your recommendation. Will look into that rubber.

I agree with carbonman, 802-40 (by Friendship) is an excellent short pips for power, control, pushing and chopping. I now play with a Seemiller grip, and I hit with 802-40 on both my FH and BH. This rubber gives me much confidence. There are short pips with less grip, but they take more practice. 802-40 has a medium amount of grip, less than any serious inverted rubber, but still enough to fish out a low shot and topspin it over the net. Hitting with the 802-40 is so easy, I was able to feel accurate the first time I used it. And chopping was super easy too!

Just in case you haven't noticed: According to his sig. it's 1.8.

In my experience you don't gain much speed or spin with SP by using more than 1.8mm sponge. You only gain some weight and lose some control. It may be different with the 802-40 (haven't tried that much).

802-40 has a nice white springy sponge. I have tried the Max thickness and quite liked it.

I've tried 802-40 in 2.0mm on forehand and that was good enough. I would say you would be best with 1.5 or 1.8 on backhand depending on if you chop/push or hit on the backhand. Probably just getting into the game you wont make enough power on the backhand to need more than 1.8mm on that side.

Red Atlas, where do you live?

802-40 had earlier versions that had a slightly harder sponge that was not good for control. In recent years the sponge most commonly used for the 802-40 is a soft 35 degrees sponge and i think this sponge is only available in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2mm. In the USA, Zeropong, Tabletennisexchange and Cole Ely all carry this rubber. This sponge is very light in all thicknesses and has very good control in all thicknesses.

Thick one ply hinoki is a good set up for SP, but maybe not for your first blade....look at Miao Miao's game in the vids for a clinque on the SP game... (she plays SP-FH/MP-BH) and is very aggressive.
