I think ox short pips with a cloth backing work better for me on a hard blade.

I'm making a list of short pips in this category to test. So far here's what I've got:

Neubauer Terminator
Valor Premiere
Andro Classic
Yasaka A-1-2
Butterfly Orthodox
TSP Miracle

Any I've missed?

That does make me wonder if a thin sponge instead of the cloth would work just as well for you.

No, as sponge will make the lp more bouncy

I've read that Dr. Evil is lousy with sponge. I like the performance of it, but the rubbers with the cloth backing I've tried seem to have a little better feel. Dr Evil has pretty hard pips and I'm using it on a carbon blade.

That's what I want to avoid. I've found I make a lot less errors with the extra control of no sponge, especially on serve return. And I still have enough power to put balls away even with no sponge.

May I ask a question Sir?

Kokutaku 911 (lp) has a textured backing which ease the gluing process.
Is it the same case here for OX SP?

Oh and also OX SP --> Is it for playing hardbat?
That makes two questions :p

For an official hardbat tourney, there is a list of accepted OX, SP rubbers. Not all SPs can be used. :)

There are a few LPs that have it. I'm not sure if the primary purpose is playability or simply ease of gluing. I know of at least one rubber that was available both ways.

You can use this type of of rubber for hardbat, provided that 1) the rubber is approved for the competition, 2) you also have the same rubber on the reverse side, and 3) you have an all wood blade.

In the USA, ITTF-approved ox short pips are allowed for open play against sponge, but most are actually banned for hardbat play. The approved hardbat list is extremely restrictive, just eleven rubbers (of which only seven are even available). European hardbat rules are a lot more reasonable in terms of the allowable rubbers.

Thx Sir MMNB!

Now I do remember that the thick basesheet helps in killing spin :)

the thick basesheet also kills the speed and adds control, but sadly kills the spin reversal effect as well

Sounds like a good control sp characteristic for me, Sir Daz!

TSP Miracle has a cloth backing, and it is what the UK over 60s no.1 Brian Hill used against me two weeks ago on his back hand. Prior to that he used Butterfly Orthodox which he reached the semi final at the 2010 World Veterans in the over 65s. It plays similar but I don't know if it has a cloth backing.

Butterfly Orthodox definitely has cloth backing. It's on my hardbat setup.

RR, what blade do you use for hardbat?

Do you know what blade Brian Hill uses?

I held it, but I can't remember. This was about 3 weeks ago. He had played Sriver on the forehand for years, but was testing a faster rubber. I think it was Joola Energy Green Power. He plays predominately classical defence though.
