I find that SP without a sponge is not very effective for hitting and even for chopping. It may be OK if someone wants to change the style of play and experiment with it.
I can't speak to chopping, but I have no problems with hitting. For me, however, the main thing is control. My accuracy has gone way up, service reception has greatly improved and I've been shocked at some of the balls I've been able to keep in play. Also it's a different stroke than the stroke with sponge. I have the Marty Reisman forehand stroke down pretty well now. Not as fast as sponge, but I miss less and overall for my game it's a net improvement.
I also have a hardbat blade (Hock No. 74), very slow. However, if I put a lot of wrist in a shot for some reason (having to to with the flex of the blade) the ball EXPLODES off the racket extremely fast. This is quite a phenomenon. In fact this is actually my backup plan for the plastic ball if long pips are no good anymore.
