Hi all, I'm new here--well, at least trying to be newly active. I'm a uni student and a short pips chopper from Canada, and I hope to learn a lot from you guys as it is clear that pips have a devoted following here.

Anyway, I just got a new sheet of TSP Super Spinpips Chop Sponge today, and am looking forward to trying it out this evening. One thing that surprised me was that its sponge was way way harder than I expected (I'm guessing more than 45deg); consequently, it's heavy too. I wonder why the "chop sponge" is such a dense sponge? Doesn't softer sponge=more control for chops? Between BTY Challenger Attack and TSP Spectol, I found that the former with a softer sponge is easier to defend with--although Spectol does offer more variation and offensive zing. So, I'm curious as to how the Spinpips chop will play.

Here's a descripiton of the rubber from tsp's site (for anyone who hasn't heard of it...)

"SUPER SPINPIPS CHOP combines the excellent pimple surface with a controlled, slightly slower sponge. This combination strengthens the pimples effect and gives an extremely better control. Additionaly, like with all Spinpips rubbers, individual spin variations are possible."

That is wierd that it would have a harder sponge...I assume it will have a deadish feel like anti-sponge. What thickness is it in?

I don't know about this rubber, but I've been very tempted by the TSP Millitall II, which according to their ratings is a very slow medium pip... One day I'll stop resisting and try it

it's 1.4-1.7. according to the japanese tsp site the density of its sponge is 50deg! on the package it says that the sponge hardness is 9/10. and, yes, you are right; it is dense but has a dead-ish feel (reminds me of the P1-R feel) and is rather slow. i only had a few hits with it though, so have not explored the rubber's other dimensions.

when i shifted to spectol from challenger attack, i was initially disconcerted because the spectol did things that i did not intend-- it would produce backspin when i was trying to make a no spin ball, pop up on a thick contact that would normally work with the Challenger A, etc. However, after a while, I began to appreciate the kind of variations the spectol adds to my game. And, although I am not able to explain what's going on in theory, my "feel" for it has greatly improved. It still continues to surprise me, but I guess that is a good thing (read: more things to explore).

How's the 799?

I like it. Actually, I really fell in love with 799-1, but it seems it will be banned soon so I switched to the normal version. 799's pips are what I would classify as medium-short; that is, they'e longer than classic pips like 802 and Spectol, but shorter than a true medium pip such as 563. This gives it a bit of a softer feel as well as being less sensitive to spin compared to many other short pips.
Since ding song and hou yingchao use 1.5 and 1.7mm thickness to their sponge, I'm trying a little less than that in hopes that it will be easier to control. I've been using 1.0 thickness, but I'm about to assemble a 799 topsheet to a 1.2mm 35 degree saviga sponge I just bought. Hopefully, this will keep it from bottoming out on the blade to soon, but also will allow more spin to pass through for chopping. I've found I can already hit against topspin and backspin fairly effectively and accurately with 1.0 so hopefull in 1.2 it will be even better.

Plus, the cost of a 799 topsheet plus a sponge of your choice is usually only around 10-13 bucks.
