I recently got a sheet of 802-40 in red and find the topsheet considerably harder than the many black sheets I've used for most of the last 5 years.

Think this is a reliable attribute of the rubber or just large sheet to sheet variation?

I also got this red rubber in 2.0 rather than 1.8 and I'm liking the balance between different types of shots with the harder topsheet combined with thicker sponge a lot.
Now I'll have to try 2.2 but if the topsheet goes back to as soft as the black it'll be unplayable for me on some touch shots.

This is consistent with my experience. The explanation I got from a factory rep is the black dye makes the rubber softer and more elastic. So, get the black one if you want better touch. ;)

Thanks for the confirmation input.

For me harder=better touch but I'm ok with believing I'm the backward one on that :)

Sorry I didn't mean to offend you... The best rubber is the one that works for you, of course! :)

I agree, the red is harder than the black. The difference between the two is LARGER than I have ever seen when comparing hardness of black and red. I found the black to be much better.

HI everyone , the fake one are always harder. if you take a look to bottom side of the rubber and both side from the brand , you gonna see that the patents are different than each other example .one is like this > and another one is like this < my point is about the 3 line of the pips which are starting from center side of brand of the rubber.
