Hi Baal: How would you rate the control of Spectol relative to Raystorm? I play a defensive game with Spectol, but was considering trying out Raystorm. I played with the BTY Challenger before, and I found it to be rather slow--great for defensive strokes, however.

I suspect Raystorm would be a poor choice for a chopper or defensive player, but frankly, I think Spectol would be bad too. These are both very fast rubbers. The difference is whether you tend to flat hit or occasionally want a bit of spin.

Having said that , when I am pushed far enough off the table - which for me is a Bad Thing - I sometimes chop with Raystorm, but I never want to do it more than once in a row. I use that tactic to give myself some time and to fight my way back closer to the table.

I've got an older black and red sheets of 1.5 that are cut for a small blade.

You have any used thin (1.7 or less) Raystorm/Flarestorm or Challenger Attack (or other short pips in thin sponge) to trade?

I got nothing thinner than 1.9 mm.
Flarestrom 2.1 mm.
729 802 I 2.2 mm
Globe 889 2.0 mm.
BTW. between 802 and 889, which one is most similar to Spectol?

I think I'll buy it. How much?

I think 802, being a little spinnier is closest. Let me see how big my sheets are and what would be a fair price. I also like the Spectol myself.

Hey Bogey, you could also try giving 5jd33 a pm. He chops with Spectol and might have an extra sheet for you to buy. Between the two of us we've both tried quite a few short pips for chopping and we both agree that Spectol is among the best :)

Yes, the Spectol Speed is the white sponge version.

Alex sells this version Spectol Speed on this site in 1.8 thickness, which is what I reviewed above: http://oneofakindtrading.com.au/Shop/pr ... cts_id=550

Just for grins I bought a sheet of 755. I'm gonna try and play like Deng Yaping for an afternoon, see if it works.

She had a special version of 755 that I think 755 Faster (which will be outlawed)was supposed to mimic. I tried playing 755 Faster and had very little success, but I think the normal version is more forgiving.

More forgiving would probably be better.

Ive tried Spectol 21 1.7mm for chopping awhile back. Its really hard to slow down the ball, unlike long pips it doesn't do anything for you. The harder the incoming chop the faster your stroke has to be to match the incoming rotation. Also the blade angle is incredibly important, just a slight miscalculation and the ball sails high, long or in the net.

Generally the consistency in chopping with short pips is quite poor and alot harder to do. With long pips I could chop all day giving heavy/floaters back. With short pips I'm struggling to put the ball on the table and most of the time it goes back with no spin, with the extremely heavy back once in a while (out of my control).

Ive found that its better for aggressive chopping. Ive seen videos with hou yingchao (a chinese chopper at the top of the world using the same rubber) chopping with it easily. I have no idea how he does what he does, just way too hard :P

Oh and as for 799, tried that before in 1mm for chopping as well. Same effect, incredibly hard to control. Its more of a medium-short soft control pip. Compared to 802 its much softer and forgiving.

Overall for short pip chopping I find that under 1.5mm sponges work against you as the blade speeds up the ball. A 1.6-1.8mm slow sponge would be ideal IMO.

having more than 10,000 hours training with that coaches i dont find that unbelievable. more amazing is some chooper warming up bh to without twirling the blade , the chopper hits with the defensive side without dropping sinking the ball!!

Perhaps you liked Spectol better because it was softer than 802.

You might try 799 in a thin sponge as it is softer and with narrower pips, so is more like Spectol. It's cheap too.

So among the other cheaper pips, the 799 is closest to Spectol then? 802 perhaps?
