Question per the title really. I'm new to the world of SPs. I believe that most inverteds need a couple of sessions to soften up a little when they play better. Is the same true for SPs?

Yes very much so. For inverted rubber it's the sponge that needs breaking in. For pips it's both the sponge and topsheet.

I have not found this to be the case. Provided the pips are kept clean every SP I've played with plays the same regardless of age. Referring to 802, Legend 105, Super Spin Pips, and a few others though I have less time on those.

To me inverted gets broken in (if a tacky rubber) as some early tack wears off.

I guess depending on how you glue (water based vs rubber cement) that the sponge changes a little with time, but to me that is not getting "broken in".
