When SP hits dip at end of table, is that a function of the rubber or stroke technique?

Do spinny pips produce more of the dip effect?

Thanks.

Well, it kind of depends. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. (BTW, not an SP user)

The issue with the term "dip" is that it means different things to different people.

Speed and Magnus effect (ME) are what determine a "Dip."

If the ball you send back is more underspin, there is more drag due to the ME on the ball, and the ball will tend to sail and then drop due to gravity. This looks like a "dip" and happens with LPs as well. So the more underpin you send back then the more "dip" you will see, depending on the speed of the ball.

For topspin balls, a faster speed ball (vs. spin) ball may look like a dip. If the power is greater than the spin, the speed overcomes the spin and the ball flies straight, until it loses enough speed to make the spin and ME more significant, thus sucking the ball down to the table.

It's always a ratio of ME vs. Speed.

Do you know what kind of ball you are sending?

You got it. I usually notice the effect after returning a spinny top spin ball. I get the most effect when hitting these balls early and hard. I'm wondering if the more I finish my stroke (theoretically more spin?) the more the dip? This effect is different than what I get from a flat smash, the dip effect is almost like a fast loop with strange trajectory.

Do spinnier pips increase this effect or is this standard for all short pips?

Everything. Including how much incoming spin the ball has. Whether a ball is dead or has heavy spin would change how open or closed you'd want your bat, but the stroke should be nearly identical. 90 deg forearm parallel to floor, bat parallel with end of table, wait for ball to come to your bat at your side (dont swing out after it), swing through the ball and end with your forehand rubber facing near your opposite shoulder. Stroke is the same for smashing/hitting with inverted. Only thing changing is the angle you're opening or closing the bat and the effect the type of rubber imparts on the ball.
