Post subject:  Which 802-40?

I have to order something from Eacheng.net and was wondering which 729 802-40 I should get in addition to my regular order.

I've tried regular 802 (not mystery) in both cream and orange sponge and like them good enough. I want to try 802-40 because I've heard they are supposed to be spinnier. Eacheng has two options:

1. Mystery II 802-40 german sponge; and
2. Mystery III 802-40 japanese sponge.

Which is better? I'll use them in max for offensive play and serving, does "Mystery" mean anything specific?

Btw, I love how RITC (Friendship 729) has at least three different names, great for branding :D

I'd recommend 802-40 with the cream sponge.

They both look cream-ish on website.

Do you think Japanese is what I want?

The first one is about USD13, has pale green sponge, the second and third about USD30-33 and pale yellow/cream sponge. I'd be tempted to buy ALL and compare them back-to-back... except I've had enough of doing that sort of thing for a while (mainly because I often can't tell the difference.. ).. but perhaps you can. Buy all, mount them on the same blade (two at a time, of course!), and try the same shots with them. And then tell us about it. They don't cost THAT much, do they? I mean, it's not like buying sheets of Tenergy or Tensors.

I always thought the "Mystery III" referred to the sponge - if so you wonder why the Japanese sponged version is also "Mystery III". Or does it refer to the topsheet?? In which case the German-sponged sheet has a different topsheet (being "Mystery II"). There's a whole RANGE of Mystery III rubbers, all pips of different lengths - 802-40, 755, 837, 563.... Note that the LARC:

https://d3mjm6zw6cr45s.cloudfront.net/2 ... _2017B.pdf

makes NO mention of "Mystery II" or "Mystery III".... so it can't mean they're different topsheets - or can it??

If the pale green sponge is the same that 729 uses for Legend 105 then I'd say go for that. It's powerful and lightweight. But you can do better than 802-40 in an SP..

Well, then it's a no brainer. Buy it, try it, if you like it, use it, if you don't, give it to someone else...

Is there a version of 802-40 with a 1.5mm sponge that is slightly slower with better feel for ball than the standard soft cream sponge version.? I.e more like Spinlord Degu.

Doesn't look like it's available, at least not from Eacheng. Fear not, however - you CAN buy 802 (though not 802-40) topsheets:

and you can buy 1.5mm sponge:

Assembling a pips-out sandwich would be a lot less problematic than assembling inverted sandwich, as far as the gluing goes. I'd glue and trim the sponge to the blade first, then glue the topsheet on top of the sponge. This is what Chinese players used to do back in the 1960s and 70s, I've been told.

no worries. found an unopened sheet of some SPs with a picture of Liu Guoliang on them. Those should do the trick for my back up.

All this is to try my new combination bat from hallmark.

You are right gluing pips to sponge no bigger did it for dr evil.

Thanks!

Post subject:  Re: Which 802-40?

I've green sponge version. In black. Can't really decide if it's worth it over normal rubber. Sure it's ok. But one thing is one has to perform precise shots ie bat angle etc to be consistent. Like other sps one can't do same as with rev. Just hit chop or play safe. Hitting hard at shots probably best along with rolls. Build point up, then finish with flat hits. Also use table angles. Far from table.......no good unless defend. Like long pips, must play within the spectrum of what short pips are good at. Play like reverse and mistakes happen. Also, this pip does react to spin. Which, to be fair makes it more similar to rev than maybe other pips. But it's not reverse if you know what I mean.
