Trying Spectol 21 in 1.8mm lately. Slightly softer sponge (30 deg. vs 35 for normal Spectol) and I don't find it bouncier. The ball digs deeper in the sponge and it really adds spin with BH chops.
Other benefit.... Spectol 21 is 3g lighter for the same cut size.

Versus 1.5mm.... I actually don't find 1.8mm faster. Less blade feel for sure but it's actually a good thing for SP chopping (more spin and better attacking possibilities).

Yeah, having less blade feel is actually not that important imo

It really depends on whether the sponge is classic or tensor type and if the pips are grippy or smooth, plus of course the speed of the blade.

A classic rubber like Spectol has a soft non boosted sponge and fairly low grip pips so it in part relies on the ball sinking into the sponge to create backspin.

My current backhand rubber Spinlord Waran has a tensor type sponge and harder grippy pips so I find that the thinnest 1.5mm sponge works best for chopping as thicker sponges are too fast i.e. I am using more the pips to create backspin. I am also using a slow Def blade which allows the ball to stay on the pips longer which again helps create both topspin and backspin.
