Matters on how much you are willing to pay. A powersponge or hd on the front and a chinese on the backhand.

hm, I guess I'm just getting the two chinese red/black and the n-10 kinda short on cash right now

**edit**

now that I've read some info, I think this should only be used for blocking and returning serves cause of the hardiness and slowness. What's a good cheap forehand rubber.

A good player can win with bad rubbers, when your technique improves so will your game.

true that, all this assembling makes me more excited to get back on the tables. Alright, I think I'm set just gonna have to wait 3-5 days to ship then a few days to come. Gonna practice while I wait.

Greetings all,

This forum has given me lots of information and inspiration, but it has not been until recently that I have gathered the courage to join. So, it is just fair, I think, to follow procedure and introduce myself.

I come from both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, but I am now playing with the Blacksburg, Virginia (Virginia Tech) club.

You can say that I am relatively new to TT: played with passion, but without proper technique while a teenager, and after many years have recently come back to learn from the very good players in my club.

The style I am trying to develop is one of attack loops combined with drives/push and chops. My handle is shakehand.

I have not had the opportunity to play at a tournament. So, I have no ratings. I regularly play, however, others who are around 1500-1700. I suppose that I am somewhere below their ratings.

My first passion is teaching and history, and that is what I do for living (now I have to figure out how to earn a living with TT)

Hiking, running, science, traveling, electronic music, woods/trees, intellectual films, and museums are some of my other hobbies.

I stumbled on this forum while seeking help in understanding TT equipment and techniques.

Cheers

I would be a great way to get to know each other if we introduce ourselves and tell us a few things about ourselves. What you tell is totally up to you, but here are a few suggestions:

- where are you from, country and club, where you play
- how long you've been playing (how old? )
- playing style
- level
- job or what you do outside TT
- other hobbies
- how you stumbled upon this forum

Cheers guys!

Dude, VT is my favorite college! i hope to go there in the future. well, back to tt, what serves do you tend to do? i normally do forehand spins, but i saw a poll that said like 95% of people saying they like to do backhand, but it isn't exactly "first nature" to me. thanks, glad to see tt hokies now and then :D

Hi all. I played a few years ago, and I'm going to play again, just for fun and doing exercise.

I was an attacker and blocker with short pips on my backhand, but I'm thinking about to use long pips on my backhand for push and block. Another possibility is short pips (FH) and long pips (BH). I never did a lot of effect, and I'm a bit lazy to begin now.

Gidday,
I am a social TT player.
I’m a Professional Fire Fighter and live in Adelaide, South Australia. I’m 67 and I’m in my 46th year of my profession.
I started playing in my mid 20s then (silly me) I gave it up for about 30years.
About a year ago my wife took up playing social TT so I went along as well. It didn’t take me long to realize what I had missed in my years away from the sport. How foolish to do that but with the lesson learnt I’m back with a vengeance, it’s now my obsession hence my forum name Gollum and like his obsession for -------- “My Precious” the ring ---- with me it’s “My Precious” my blade and TT. :D :D :D 8) 8) 8)
The social group we play with are mainly senior citizens with one of our number a sprightly 92 years young. The majority have played in different levels of competition so what some might lack in mobility they make up with skill.
At work as a part of our physical fitness program we play TT; we have a lot of very athletic personnel who compete in all sorts of sporting codes, such as Aussie Football, soccer, surfing, track & field, swimming, rock climbing, mountain & road bike riding and so on.
I’ve had very little coaching, nothing official yet, but the fire fighters I play with are very fit and just keep hitting the ball back no matter what. This makes for very competitive TT.
When I started playing again they thought that they would cream me but to their surprise I held my own and are improving.
Other than TT my hobbies are 4WDriving in the Aussie Outback, surfing the net (mainly for TT research), Ooak TT Forum, training & exercising my 2 dogs, collecting and drinking red wine.
Looking for information and better equipment I found Alex from the Ooak TT Shop and then the forum and the rest is history ---- I love TT and the Ooak Forum.
I also love LP’s :* :* :*

Sppedcubingman,
I wish you could join the VT community. The TT club and team is really good and provides a supportive network for incoming students. However, its age level tends to be somewhat high since most are graduate students and international students. It seems that many undergraduate students are put off by the level of commitment the players here show since I have seen many good young players that have chosen not to join (as a large institution with a "football and a drinking problem," VT is full of temptations for new students that distract from work and studies, which explains why first year grades tend to be low).

In regards to serves, I would tell you that I have done forehand side spin serves all my life and they have traditionally been killers. But the people here became immuned to them rather quickly. So, I have had to come up with a variety of serves, all of them spiny. The backhand spiny serve is also difficult for me to perform. But I am also practicing it because I have noticed that the key to win points with serves (at least, among high level players) is to change serves and to hide their spin (so the opponent would not read your service).

I just wish I could have more time for practice!!!

Cheers

Welcome to the Forum Gollum!

It is great to see that age is not a factor in choosing sport!

I noticed that you play with 1.2mm sponge on your FH, I too have played with a lot of thin FH rubbers. What style of play do you have with your FH?

Thanks for your welcome "glennholder" and Gidday from Adelaide Australia. 8) 8) 8) 8)
Age is only an issue if you don’t have the desire, the health or the fitness to carry out the task and none of those are problems for me. :D :D :D :D
As I reported I am an operational fire fighter that means I’m an emergency worker on a fire appliance putting out fires and rescuing people trapped in vehicle accidents and I work at a very busy station.
Most of the fire fighters I play with at work are in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s and are natural athletes who are very fit and I don’t have any trouble with my fitness maybe a little with my skill.
As for what style I play on my forehand ----- well that a good question as seeing I haven’t had any coaching as yet although I will be getting some in a couple of weeks after which I will have a better idea.
:?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
I like to play the angles with good control; I like to spin most of my forehands with mainly topspin or backspin. I like to chop! :Chop: :Chop: :Chop: :Chop:
I don’t usually smash my returns I prefer to confuse my opposition and have him/her choose the wrong shot.
:| :| :| :|
With coaching I’m hoping to find out where I am at and would like to better execute ----my topspin loop and use my LP on my backhand.

I've been hanging around this forum for almost a year but never posted, and the discussions on TT gear is so informative that I thought I'll join in! :)

I played competitively in State tournaments from the age of 9 to 14 and then stopped playing for a long time. Now, I found a table in my new company and started playing again (I'm 34). I've always played offensive close to the table and started playing with Sriver and then moved to Mark V.

After reading a lot of posts here, I'm planning to try out some non-tacky chinese rubbers.

I have to say that there are some really good analysis of equipment and techniques here! Rock on!

Cheers!
Daniel
