Is this a good sponge for a first short pips rubber? I think I've read the softer the sponge the better it is for starters.

Hi sunflex, I hope I am not too late...

Agooding once recommended me to try it out, so I got a thick (2.2mm) one with 802-40 on top.

It's a medium-speed, soft sponge which helps well with ball feel on soft and medium contact like pushing for placement. You might want to either speed it up with some tuner/glue or pair it up with a relatively fast and hard blade if you find it too slow for your liking; this is easy because there are many fast blades with have that medium or hard feel.

On hard contact, the sponge allows you to feel the blade well, as it compresses relatively easily.

Being soft sponge, it will help to make some short pimples feel a bit more spinny, which might be good for a first short pips rubber.

It is also relatively cheap, so it makes for a great stepping stone for a first short pips rubber.

A teamamte got a sheet also on 802-40. He has better control and spin than the stock sponge and even unboosted it seems to be springier than the Dawei Lightning. Seems like the same performance as a Japanese sponge but less money.

Unless I am mistaken, didn't Wang Tao suggest that the softest sponge be used for the BH and harder for the FH?

This 30 degrees sponge might be a good fit then.

That's what I had heard. Seems plenty fast enough for my teammate.
