Hey Experienced Players,

The other day at the club. I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before. Ok, with my pendulum serves I get ALOT of misread returns back. Now most of the lesser players when they misread the serve it's my point right off the bat no matter what, but with some of the better players, eventhough they misread my serve it still stays on the table with exceptable positioning to where I can't just hit a put away shot on the third ball. I could see their blade angles were horribly off from where they were supposed to be to return the ball correctly. Now if I have my blade angle that screwed it's going to be in the net or off the table. I am usually pretty good on the reading of the spin fortunately, but I want to know how these guys do this. I kinda asked what he was doing differently, and he said it's all in the grip. Can someone explain this to me?

somehow I don't think it's in the grip, are they putting the handle in the air and blade downwards?
Also are they angleing the ball to your wide FH and BH?

Perhaps it's not merely the grip (perhaps just merely touching the ball -- light contact) but also a factor of your rubber?

The only relevant part with the grip IMO, is that if you loosen the grip and relax the hand/arm more, you can play a much softer shot and it's a lot less senstive to incoming spin. If you tense up and dig into the ball, it grips much more, so you have to pick it much better, but if you pick it riht you can play a much more aggressive shot.

Do you hold the blade differently in any way, or do you just go (pardon the term) limp wristed?

I hold it less tight, and try not to dig into the ball, just make very gentle contact...

When your not quite sure what spin is on the serve people try to place there bat under the ball and get ready, and most of the time it goes on but presumabley not an impossible return.

Suggestion: When serving from the BH corner with your FH try to touch the ball on differet spots on your bat e.g

Topspin serve: Touch ball top of the bat, you get more topspin then if you touch on the bottom.

Try alternate with where you touch the ball this way youll know whether the return will have spin or not and if you know that then looking at the angle of the bat of your oponent will determine the place of the ball and you can put it away from there (you know the place and spin of the ball now you just have to maneuver your feet to where the ball is).

Experiment!

Cheers
