recently I have had decent success when forced away from the table chopping with 802-40 SP 1.8 on the BH,my technique is not right but seems to be effective,I chop like a push but with a bit more downward movement i.e. the ball most often is in front of me.
Is it much better to do a downward stroke from the side of you, please consider my sponge is 1.8 and not a very thin control sponge,it has become a bit of an asset and would like to get my technique as good as I can, quite a few people seem to get a bit intimidated when I chop away from the table then rush in to get back close to the table.....all help appreciated cheers

I hope someone can help you. For me your question is a bit like: "what's the best technique for jumping out of planes using my shirt as a parachute?"

I don't have much advice to give you from personal experience, but I would suggest going on youtube and watching some videos of hou yingchao for a while. When you compare his technique directly with Joo's or Weixing's, it's easier to pull out the differences in technique required to chop with short pips. Its actually succeeding in incorporating those techniques into your game that's the hard part.

By the way, hou yingchao uses 1.7mm sponge althoug his spectol pips are less sensitive to spin than the 802-40.

cheers.....My chopping stoke is similar to hou yingchao's but just not quite as good
I never really chopped anything before but just these past few weeks started when away from the table and it's going pretty good and also I am enjoying it too,I have some LP on order and will try them for a few sessions see if I like them,it is a nice change of pace as well as adding another weapon (albeit a pea shooter) to my arsenal
