Recently I decided to video myself play and also video some of my mates play. We looked at video recordings and were astounded to see that we played very different to how we imagined we played, both in strategy and style. My friend could not believe that he basically didn't move and all his shots came from his arms, rather than his body. I had always classed myself as a modern defender but when I saw my play, it looked more like a classic defender. We were also surprised how amautuerish we looked in comparison to how professional we thought we played.

I plan on doing some more recording of our games over time to see if we can enhance our techniques and games. Gained some fantastic insights, particularly around some of our blindspots. Would highly recommend to any player to do who wanted to find another avenue to improve their game.

Regards
Nathan

welcome to the club..

it's really sad when u see urself on video and go.. "holy chao i look like a retard"

haveng been thru the same ordeal.. i gave it some thought, the main thing that makes us look amateurish on video is the high stance. the moment we lower our stance it starts looking better.

when u watch pro players their knees are almost at 90degrees.. that's quite a distance to go down! first few weeks the legs will hurt but then u start getting used to it..

i'm getting there.. i still forget about staying low and slowly thruout the game start standing higher and higher.. i think i need to attach my shorts to my shoes with some bungee cord :)

If I'm ever getting a camera I'm going to film my juniors and project it on the wall and make them analyse themselves.
and of course tape myself^^

Yes so true Nathan! Some of us have actually posted vids of themselves here on the forum... although not everyone has the courage to do this, they often get some very useful tips from other members...

Thanks for the tip. I know we have one player who consistently gets low, and it feels intimidating when playing him (i mean, just looking at him).

Does it actually help improve one's game or is it more for cosmetic or intimidation factors?

it makes a huuuuuge difference in the game.

im sure there are more benefits but the ones that i can list off my head

(1) u cover more area. ur left to right range standing up is much smaller than ur left to right range crouching down

(2) ur crossover point narrows. the "elbow" area when ur crouching down is almost inexistant as u can flip from BH to FH effortlessly. (this is why they say when playing really tall people, aim their crossover point, it's a weakness when ur really tall)

(3) you see/judge spin better

(4) you're in a much better position to reach ur maximum loop velocity at ball contact. when u start ur loop from an extended arm position and end up at a salute position, ur maximum velocity is somewhere in the middle of that range. when ur low, that coincides nicely with when ur supposed to hit the ball.

(5) backhand loops (cant do them when ur high)

(6) u build sexy legs muscles and get the girls. (and speedplay)

when you stand tall you have to bend down and then up to use your legs while making a shot,if you are crouched down you just have to move up.
When crouching you have much better torque in your waist thus gaining more power, watch Mike Tyson if you want to understand what torque can do
