One can certainly develop better fundamentals for both fh and bh without playing against higher level players. Once he/she obtains a certain level of competency (say 1800-1900), it's imperative to have higher level practice partners to train with regularly...

Other things that you can do apart from the great 8 suggestions are........
Hit to the lower rated players strengths
do soft serves so you have to work harder to win a point
practice specific goals like, doing say 10 banana backhands in a game or focus on attacking all serves etc
get your friend to multi ball to you

Agree. You can play vs the other players strength[veoh][/veoh]. Example BH to FH drills, blocking etc.

Good article. I think over the years we have covered everything in it in our discussions, but it summarises nicely. In the end though, you do need to play higher level players once you reach a certain point. The things in the article can only take you so far, pretty much as RR has said.

You need to play against 3 different types of players in order to improve. You need to play against worse players so that you can develop and learn how to use your tactics to win, against players of the same or a similar level so you can sharpen your weapons under pressure and try to come out on top and against players of a much higher level so that you can see just what is possible. If you only train against far superior players all the time, you never learn to win because you control the game. (Also this can lead to mental problems and loss of confidence).

When I started playing after a long lay off, I played mostly player better than me. I was able to improve my game but my mental game is not that strong. This is maybe the reason I'm lacking on the mental side. :(

I've got a pretty good player who lives nearby but doesn't support our local club and goes to others much further away. He's good but not an elite player by any stretch (and also a long pip hater, which may be his primary reason for not coming). This guy could benefit from reading this article. He's my #1 take down target at the moment.

It's his lost. Why hate when you can learn  ? Maybe his taking his table tennis too serious and forgot the fun part.

Very true, why strive to improve when you do not enjoy it, if you are not enjoying improving why even play?

As a lower intermediate player, I always find stuffs to improve when I am playing with someone below my level. Its always a joy :)
I usually find some flaws in my basic strokes such as counterhitting, pushing, short game, etc.

An absolute yes. How do you tell if you have improved? You do this by winning matches. The aim of practice and training is merely preparation for the real objective of winning matches against opponents.

And winning is fun! There are times that I felt on quitting when experiencing multiple defeat. But hey, I'm improving. Those who are beating me easily before cannot do this anymore. They have to fight for every point or they will be defeated. I play at 2 clubs. At the other club, I belong to the top 3 always. At the other, I belong to the bottom 3. I have to climb up the ladder.. :^)
