Perhaps the only thing missing from what has been already said, is equipment.

If you want to be a classic defender who doesn't need to attack much to win games, you can be. But you need grippy inverted with 1.0-1.4 sponge on f/h, 1.2-1.6 sponge under your pips (ideally around the same speed as your f/h rubber), a very slow classic defender's blade, and to learn to twiddle. Then you can create SO much underspin that few attackers can continiously loop at you, and even those who can, can't loop so fast.

They can't attack you very fast, and the twiddling confuses your opponent to death, without you needing to attack them.

This is what Evgueni Chtchetinine does (as mentioned a few posts ago). Dispite the fact he rarely attacks, less than 100 people in the world can beat him, and he's not very young anymore.

So, my advice (like the rest of the posters in this thread) is to pratice some modern aggression, or to buy a new bat and start creating some super serious underspin!

Chtchetinine is a great classical defender. I highly doubt less than 100 people in the world could beat him... In fact I think you could find more than 100 just in China.

However style is a personal thing. If you enjoy the game and you are not a professional, I don't see anything wrong with sacrificing a couple hundred rating points to play a fun game that involves chopping. Have fun. It's not a job.

you could find more then 1000 in china

Have watch the ATTU on TV. I forgot the name of the lady defender in the finals ( China vs China affair ). It is very heart warming to watch a chopper.
However, strategy wise, a very good offensive player will always beat a very good defensive player. Just my opinion though.
