Hi friends!

I recently switched to 802-40, 1.8mm on my BH. I can hit flat smashes well against topspin, but against heavy backspin pushes I'm often dumping the ball into the net and occasionally hitting long.

Any advice on technique please?

If you're pushing the backspin balls into the net, you're probably just digging into the ball too hard, or you need to adjust the bat angle a little more...Since the 802-40 is quite grippy, it plays similar to inverted.

There was a really good article on hitting with short pips here somewhere...It basically talked about the contact point on the ball when hitting... against backspin you need to make contact at about 4 o-clock (where 3 o'clock is is right at the back of the ball). Of course you need to read the amount of backspin, and make some minor adjustment.

Hopefully our short pips players can chip in some more here. ;)

The key element in your question is the preface that you had recently switched to 802-40. You will get used to it in time, you just have to get used to what racket angles you can use and how hard to hit depending on circumstance. For the time being, take just a little pace off the ball until you are more familiar with its properties.

Seconded. Give yourself time to adjust to the correct blade angles for hitting. Short pimples are great for attacking but the grippy ones like 802-40 still require plenty of adjustment against your opponents spin. Never think you can just hit anything incoming the same just because you've got sp's.

That is all good advice, thank you all very much! I will recognize that I must take steps in this learning!
