Hi all,

Excuse the name change - long story...

I've spent a lot of time recently working on my forehand topspin and my SP chopping, but I'd like to get some recommendations on general drills for practising a modern defence style of play.

I play 3 hours/week against a robot, but in six weeks or so that number will raise significantly as I purchase my own. I also play another 12 hours or so against humans.

I'm thinking along the lines of "chop, chop, push, attack" type drills. Are there any you've used vs. robots or humans that I could try?

Thanks!

Depending on your level of play you should probably not spend so many hours training with the robot. While robots are great to practice and improve specific elements of your game you will not learn how to play against human opponents. In fact playing against human opponents may actually be more difficult because you expect the same amount of spin in every ball.

In short: improve your base level and technique playing the robot but practice against human opponents as much as possible.

What robot do you plan to purchase? One benefit I got playing robot is the correct stroke by developing both my hand movement and foot movement. Anyway, Im using newgy and not familiar with other robot.

Although I'm a double inverted, I believe you can practice back hand chop and forehand spin effectively. Or you could vary chopping and blocking on your backhand and attacking on the forehand. I used the stored drills and plan the drill ahead before practicing.

Good luck on your practice.

Sorry, can't reply to certain threads whilst st work. The proxy classified replying to this as Offensive & Tasteless. Jeez, thanks!

I'll be buying a fairly decent robot with programmable capabilities. I use a Newgy non-digital at the moment and although it's OK it's really frustrating having to change the head every time you want a different spin!

Elvis - yeah, when I get my new place I'll be using the robot 'as and when'. I've just been asked to play two additional days at another club which means I'll likely be playing every day bar Tuesday and Saturday against humans.

I modified the Falkenberg drill for modern defense as follows (assuming both players are RH):

Partner: feed backspin to BH
You: push to BH
Partner: loop to BH
You: Chop
Partner: drop/push
You: loop to BH
Partner: block down the line
You: loop to BH
Partner: block to BH
You: chop

Rinse and repeat. Just a few repititions can be pretty tiring. Your partner can mix in slow loops and loop drives to test you even more. Obviously this can be reversed for forehand chops or shortened or lengthened as desired. I mention this particular pattern because it involves pushing, chopping, looping vs underspin, and looping vs topspin all into one drill.

Sounds very nice, will give it try in my next training session :)
