Hi, my name's Henry. I'm new to this forum and am looking to improve my game!
I've been playing most of my life, but didn't really get serious until the last few months.
One concern I have with my game is how I hold my backhand. Most people have the back of their hand facing their opponent, whereas I have my knuckles facing my opponent and the back of my hand facing upwards. I also use the same side of my racket for both my forehand and backhand (except when I have to reach to my left, then I turn my racket to its "natural backhand" side to extend a few extra inches). Is this common? Will this hinder my game as I try to get better and more competitive? Are there any players who successfully play like this?
I've tried changing, but it just feels awkward and I don't have a practice partner / robot to help me constantly work on it.
Thanks

Hi Henshouse, welcome to the forum.

Is this the grip you're talking about?

I was thinking he was meaning the windscreen washing technique , by either holding the bat normal shakehand or with the pointing finger on the side of the blade

The Seemiler Grip, perhaps. The Seemiller Grip started out as a basement grip, but it's good enough that the main exponent of it became the best player in the U.S. for many years.

IF it's seemiller grip, then there's no reason to be concerned. IT's a legit way of playing and has it's pros ( and cons) Some of the toughest players ( same level) I've faced are those with the same grip just because it's uncommon and gives me problems (specially when they twiddle and use anti) . If you do use this grip, take advantage of it and use it to full potential by using anti on one side or Long pips lol.
