I had years of EJing (all of which is documented somewhere on the forum  ) and I agree that the cheap chinese stuff is hardly worth pursuing (barring a few "goodies"). What do you already have at your disposal beside what you've mentioned so far? I think you've said you have Gambler 4 kings rubbers? Are they new? They may be ok to put on an all-wood blade. Although really I'd go for either standard Sriver or Mark V if you can buy them (or even Butterfly Flextra in 2mm is a great control rubber). I'd agree with the YSE (Yasaka) blade unless you already have an all wood blade of reasonable quality. If you did want to try something cheaper the YinHe W6 is one of those "goodies" I referred to. Similar to the YSE I believe. (I still have one somewhere - but not a great pips bat).

The key thing to remember here is to get a bat that has fair control without aiming for a holy grail...cos you'll never find it. It doesn't exist. And the reason for that is the player must groove themself to the bat, not the other way around. Find something reasonable and then "actually develop skill and technique USING it by PRACTICING". If you can find another player who is willing to practice shots over and over and over without getting into games, that will be your best asset. If people will only play games, be prepared to lose by playing the same shot over and over. Games are great for developing ways to win with strategy, but only if you're COMPLETELY ok with losing are they any good for stroke development. A robot would be an awesome assistant too.

I considered recommending a W6 but I am not sure how easy it is to take care of it - the new YSE is pretty sturdy and only $8 or so more.
