Hello,

I've heard this term "pick hitting" especially with regards to pips players. What does it really mean? Is this a full on strategy or just another way of saying you smash pop ups?

Thanks in advance

I'm not a fan of this term, but I believe it means back hand hitting balls that are high enough.

I think this term comes from hard bat days, meaning you keep the ball in play and pick your good spots to attack carefully, not forcing the attack.

Yes, I'd say the term is used for expressing a strategy of looking for a "prime" ball to hit rather than just going after anything. Part of this of course is moving the ball around on the opponent looking for a way to get them to return to you what you want to "pick hit". I think it is best applied to a pips game given it tends to be the overall goal of many pips players, but I don't think its entirely the domain of pips players alone.

Many all round offensive players are essentially pick loopers, just blocking you around and waiting for the right ball to loop hard.

I think it applies mainly to choppers and pushers who play mainly defense, but who will put away a loose (i.e. high) return. Most of these high returns will be pushes (i.e. have backspin on them). The main idea is that the pick hitter doesn't play an attacking game. While all defensive players have an attack as part of their repertoire, the pick hitter tends to hit more often than most. Yes, this goes back to the days of hardbat.

Yup, Reb and Iskander. I like Reb's term of prime.

"PICK" is choose, so a "Pick Hit" is a ball you choose to hit, usually, an easy presentable chance to "Hit" or smash and win the point. Often, LPer bump or push and opponent opens blade too much and coughs up the high ball chance for a "Pick Hit"

I like NL's variation on it all, that is me sometimes on serve receive.
