In the butterfly Arnold final jian li played a "bump" on his returns described by Dan Semiller (sp) He seemlessly moved from chopper to attack. Is it possible to play a bump return without pips?

I'd say you can, but going from what I've seen, it's often used by a pips/anti player if they're unsure of the spin on the ball, so playing a short ball with a low-throw rubber is the safest move. My feeling is you could do it with an inverted, but it sort of defeats the purpose (at least most of the time). If you know what angle to hit the ball at with an inverted, you may as well push or flick. Then again, every shot has a use (except the ones I do that hit my blade and go flying onto another court).

I think that by definition a 'bump' refers to attacking a backspin ball with a push, and relying on spin 'reversal' to make it drop, so this implies you can only do it with a rubber that can reverse the spin. I'd agree with Musicfreak0 though, that you can play with shot with inverted, but it would not be a 'bump'.

Yes I would A 'roll' is like 'going with the spin' when returning it, which produces a similar ball, although probably not as dangerous and more predictable.
