Yep. I am a realist and an EJ :-D

Recently the club coaches have been telling me to play slower, move much faster and also play a more "direct" loop-drive.

Basically, play a shorter loop stroke on any ball bouncing above the net height. And a longer faster higher loop stroke for any lower ball with just a little more "brush".

I think what they are suggesting is that I start pacing my returns to coincide with my movement speed to the extent that the opponent has to "wait" longer for the ball to actually bounce while I spend more time analysing what return to expect and get ready to move accordingly.

Problem is I am not very good at anticipating or predicting. So my consistency is my suffering problem and I haven't figured out how to fix it yet. And I am not sure how or what will help towards the anticipating and predicting parts.

Irregular placement drills.

You mean kill my ankles and kill my legs while you drill me ? I will see if I can't play slower and try to reset to neutral position before opponent places the ball.

I do have an insane RPB but I end up in situation like XX, trying to do TPB when my RPB would have given the right reply.

Not sure if the only option for my age player is to keep playing a reactive game. I don't have movement speed like the little tykes, but I do have enough stamina.

Movement needn't be that expansive, providing you recover to correct point in relation to the shot you played.

It's like a goalkeeper in football (soccer) - the best ones are not the ones diving around tipping shots around the post, they just stand there and catch the ball - because they are always in the right position.

Train to be in correct position, not the big footwork drills.

Sage advice. It sounds a bit like telling someone to "be better", but it is actually remarkably simple and achievable. Just got to learn how to remember it during matches.

I think that if a beginner starts with super-speedy equipment they will be encumbered and hamstrung to good technical development in comparison to the "classical" controlled approach. They will develop "bad-habits" and unorthodox shot-making techniques. However, if that is all they ever know and they practice with it and don't lose interest due to frustration, I think its entirely possible they could end up an accomplished player. Whether they can ever shake off the bad habits to rise as high as the classically trained player would only be known if it were actually done in a controlled experiment I think, where all other factors are held equal. If not controlled, then you would never know if other factors were responsible for successes or failures. Things like a different coach, more or less practice time, different opponents, other different playing conditions could all contribute to the results otherwise. In other words it would need to be done in a scientific way.
