Hmm, well I'm certainly no expert. However I have noticed the following.

With a tacky rubber (hard sponge) the chop seems to work best with a bit of wrist flick to make the most of the tacky rubber gripping the ball as it goes past.

When I switched to the current non-tacky (or at least not very tacky) 729 FX Jap sponge 1.5mm, I have found that I have had to adapt my technique quite a lot. The previous technique of firm wrist and ball brush will more often than not send the ball of the end of the table. The 729 works because of mechanical spin rather than tacky rubber. I.e the ball has to sink into the rubber and sponge a bit for spin to be imparted. For off the table chops, I find that a good classic 'arm' stroke is the way to go - it seems that so long as I get the technique right, the ball ends up on the table with lots of backspin. For close to the table work (pushes with backspin, or short chops in front of the body) I have found that I need to relax the wrist and sort of 'feather' the stroke. Again, a firm wrist will catapult the ball off the rubber off the end of the table.

Anyone else got any thoughts on this?
