There is a big discussion that I started about over at DTTW, which should give you a lot of info about it: http://tabletennis.gr/forum/forum_posts ... cing-serve

There may well be different tips posted back here as well, though.

I find that underspin is a literal serve. if you can "literally" spin the ball from underneath it instead of behind it, which alot of beginner players seem to do - you'll effectively be able to load on the backspin. also - throw the ball higher. with more kinetic energy coming onto your bat, you'll need less wrist action hitting the ball at 7 O'Clock than you would with a lower ball toss.

Hi Big d and welcome,
alot depends on your bat and rubbers (so its a good idea so say what you are using) as if you are using a basic pre made bat the rubbers might not be effective in creating down spin compared to say Chinese tacky rubbers or most good Japanese or European rubbers.

what I think you mean is how to do a basic chop serve and to do that stand a half meter back from the table and stand slightly sideways ie left shoulder closer to the table then toss the ball up 150mm or a bit more and hit the ball with a chop action with the bat at 45' angle and aim closer to your end of the table so the ball will go over (some practice and adjustments will be required) . Now to see if it worked get a friend to hold thier bat verticle to the table and if you have put spin on it should when it hits his back the ball should just go striaght down.
now there are many variations of this serve ie doing it fast or short or with a bit of side spin and as you get better you will be able to aim it better and hit even lower on the ball .

Im treating this explanation as if you are a beginer so If you are a higher level then sorry
