Yes, it's like a desease. Once it really gets you, you'll never get rid of it. Also, it doesn't need to be done under the table. Here are some downloadable examples of smooth/fast match twiddling. If you don't watch for it you'll constantly miss it.

there are a lot of video links here...which ones has the example of twiddling?

Try the one between Paul Pinkewich vs Greg Letts, the Defender Highlights, or the Greg vs Jeff Drew matches - all will have some twiddling going on - especially the Paul vs Greg match!

You can also check out the guide to twiddling (with video) I wrote at http://tabletennis.about.com/od/longpimples/a/how_to_twiddle.htm

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks Greg!

I'll check it out when I get home from work tonight.

Cheers

Greg, I was impressed by your twiddling. I can twiddle (just by myself, haven't had a chance to try it in the middle of a rally) but I find I have to kind of toss up the racquet a little bit (still in my hand of course) to get the spin. You can twiddle with very little hand movement whatsoever - and much faster and snappier.

I'll have to practice!

Don't worry, you'll get there. It honestly is just a matter of practice. When I first started I spent a couple of months practicing at home while watching TV etc, somewhere when I wasn't paying full attention to it. Now after 15 years plus twiddling, it's second nature.
