My red 1.2mm Beast has arrived. The fit and finish of the rubber is very good and a glue sheet is included.

Received it in the late post, so have not taken it to the table yet.

I have used both versions of the Giant Dragon Soft anti-loop and also the first generation GD Anti and Anti special plus a couple of thicknesses of Nightmare and there is a similarity in looks to the Soft, at least, but don't know about the similarities among the sheets of sponge. The sponge/topsheet does dimple slightly when struck with a ball thrown sharply into its surface.

In bouncing the ball, on the Beast (glue sheet attachment)on a Ross Leidy custom WRC blade (working name: Mysterium with an aprox. thickness of ten mm), the bounce (drop test) is less than on Stranger 1.2, but still slightly higher than Hallmark Original.

After spinning the ball with the inverted and allowing it to bounce on the Beast, the reversal was really amazing. On this test it seemed on a par with Original (don't know how when it be when receiving a sharply struck ball (either hit or loop) will affect the rebound or reversal. I think someone on noppentest said their sheet of Beast gave little reversal. I have not yet had the need to clean mine with cockpit cleaner or similar.:)

The top sheet quality seems to be excellent with a low gloss finish and crisp graphics.

Will get in a little practice tomorrow and maybe some against the robot.

Hope springs eternal,
tOD

More to follow
Edit <POC to WRC> Ross has agreed to post some pictures to the blade. It is a beauty.

Blade is a new prototype from Ross, not particularly designed with anti or long pips in mind, but it worked well for me with Original and Stranger Attack
FH rubber is 729 Inverted

I tried Nightmare 1.5 on the same blade so I can at least compare my impressions on those.

Thanks,
tOD

Hi tOD

I hope you get a chance to review the Beast soon. I live in the UK and would welcome your advice on the type of blade that would suit this rubber. The promotional film has the rubber mounted on an all round Spinhunter blade.

Bulldog.

Also interested to see your feedback on this. I'm going through a weird TT phase that gets me every January and increasingly is worse every year. I call it my January blues but this year it started in December and I still have it. I basically am bored and don't care as much - still play some good matches and my results are fine, but I'm just not so bothered. I keep contemplating a change of direction...hardbat, anti, inverted...not sure I'll do any of these but an encouraging review of the wee Beast might turn my head!

Here are a few photos of theOldDuffer's blade. It's meant to provide a 1-ply feel in a 3-ply form, providing a large sweet spot and stable, strong cross-section. Composed of WRC-Balsa-WRC, the edge-banding is also WRC, which pushes the 1-ply appearance - a good choice by theOldDuffer. Thickness is just a hair over 10mm.

A work of art! If it were mine I don't think I would dare play with it.
