Probably inverted sandwich much like we use today. Apparently the Japanese invented it before ITTF mandated it's use in 1959. Before that a lot of people were playing with (very thick) bare sponge.

(And I'll bet some people call those strokes loop drives - they're not. Those are classic topspin drives.)
