it purely a table tennis thing? I've never seen tennis players on TV "cho-ing".

tennis players push themselves at times with a "yes!" or "come on!". "cho", "tchuk", "sa/so" however seem to be a pure TT related thing ;)

In Chinese (Mandarin, but it might be similar in Cantonese and other dialects) they say something which sounds like "How Cho" when someone makes a good shot. Maybe this got corrupted/shortened to "Cho" when others got around to using it?

In all soberness, there's very little excuse for not respecting your opponent. I mean, there wouldn't be a match without your opponent, right?

As an Aussie, I do feel the Australian cricketers tend to have ugly 'table manners'. Sure, it does seem to be an infection of the cricket world. If I recall correctly, the Indian team some years back sledged an Aussie player by calling him a monkey.

I do think Australian sport - players and spectators - do have issues when it comes to respect sometimes. But no excuses.

I'm Australian and I don't think that is generally what we are like so why don't you just suck it up and get on with the forum you big loser...........   ........kidding !

I personally don't like to see someone rub another person's nose in their misery. I don't mind a bit of banter whilst its still 'game on' but once its over, including after a dismissal, I find it a bit kicking like someone when they are down, when they can't do anything about it. Not very heroic. Ok when toe to toe but not after you have won the battle.

I have to admit though, both me and the wife although going for Australia, wouldn't have minded too much if NZ had of won. They just seem to play in the right spirit, just too many beards for my liking.

we expect it, don't need it, just the way they are

I desperately wanted the Kiwis to win! I really did. When it comes to Aussies in mainstream sports like cricket, football and rugby -- they're usually too young, too well paid and many are just a bunch of ratbags. My 2 cents. |(
