Post subject:  Swedish Open - many nice players

Tomorrow Swedish Open starts with many fine players and a lot of Swedish players. Actually, Swedish TT is having a slight revival for the moment with more attention in media and many good players, and more than for a long time in top 100 in the world:
35 GERELL Par
47 KARLSSON Kristian
53 KARLSSON Mattias
76 KALLBERG Anton
79 PERSSON Jon
98 LUNDQVIST Jens

Fabian Åkerström (#216) got a very tough start, he has to face Alexandar Karakasevic, also known as the LP-slayer  . But the good news is that they will be playing on table 2 (at 16:15 Swedish time) so finally there will be a nice film with Fabian playing.

Other players to watch out for:
SHIONO Masato JPN
HE Zhiwen ESP
PAVLOVICH Viktoria BLR
DVORAK Galia ESP (LP attacker)
HAN Ying ^ GER
IVANCAN Irene GER
YANG Xiaoxin ^^ MON (isn't she a defender???)
LI Qian POL
MIKHAILOVA Polina RUS (will she be as good as in European Champs?)
DOLGIKH Maria RUS
BERGSTROM Linda SWE (young Swedish defender)
BILENKO Tetyana UKR
I think at least one of the Japaneese girls is playing defensive, right?

And other players that might be interesting or just fun to watch:
MAZE Michael DEN
OUAICHE Stephane FRA
HARIMOTO Tomokazu JPN (the fast playing fellow born 2003)
MOREGARD Truls SWE (next big Swedish player, born 2002, will be playing young American Kanak Jha on table 2 early tomorrow).
KALLBERG Anton SWE (soon to be the best Swedish player, born 1997, beat Gionis a few days ago)

You can soon (in 1 hr 45 min from this post) watch in real time here: http://www.ittf.com/ittv/
or after the match at the same place, just click on ITTF World Tour, Swedish Open at the same link and scroll down to the match (normally it takes an hour or two after the match is finished before it is published there).

Saw Persson beat a Japanese kid and I saw Mattias Karlsson beat a French guy called Petiot, but I didn't see Fabian play. Not sure if I missed it, or its not on yet.

Edit: Oh its about to start now on Table 2.

Seems that the Swedish coaches are really getting their players honed in on obviously illegal serves. 30 degree arc tosses and well behind the body. Not to mention Par Gerell's nonsense.

And that is a problem specific for Swedish players?

It's all about getting as big of an advantage as you can get, most players do this, certainly the ones at higher levels. They need to balance on the line of what's allowed and not to be as competitive as possible. It's the same as diving or trying to influence the referee in sports like football or hockey.

I'm not saying it's a honorable thing to do but it's a part of high level sports and I do it just as much myself.

No, it's not. But it jumped out at me in an exaggerated way when I perused a few of the matches.

Anyone remember this match? Look at 2:32 where Shibaev is in the lead 2-0 and 10-3 (a five set match). Guess what happens?

I just watched Shibaev having the lead in almost every single set against Kristian Karlsson. And he had a big lead in the deciding 7th, but Kristian managed to win 11-9 in deciding set. Shibaev needs to work with his mental strength.
