Wow, very frustrating for the players indeed! I've never seen anything like this either...good to see it captured on camera.

Hopefully the umpire is ok, because I agree that this is highly unusual and he's likely to be experiencing some health issue.

yeah, calling a referee must be the only thing you can do... hopefully the tournament is big enough to have one.

Incompetence comes in many forms, I agree. Yet, any criticism without direct reference to Rules is much like baby cry in the midnight.

Do you know that umpire in the video??

why should one need have direct reference to the rules to criticise? That is the job of umpires and referees to memories everything inside out, no?
I mean, does the players need to quote x rule on x point, or can they just use plain simple communication or English to say, the umpire is terrible? or like Su Pei-Ling used plan English, "Where is the ball"?
The trained umpire with all these rules in the head...said, I don't know.

If everything needs to go with x this or y this, then the world will become very sad mini-igors.
99.9% of table tennis players on this world probably haven't even seen the ITTF Law of Table Tennis before, because the amateur/social/garage market is way bigger than any serious players.
We need to learn to speak to the masses, not just to the minority.

This tournament should be big enough. Since it is an WTT tournament.
Su actually told me at one stage, the umpire fell asleep....

I know umpiring is a tough job. Match after match.
I was at a tournament this week, umpires were 8am on duty, 9pm off duty....5 days in a row.
Most umpires are retirees too...
