I've written a comprehensive guide with lots of pictures on how to glue with water based glue, specifically Donic Vario Clean, although I'm sure there are few others that are very similar:

Water based Table Tennis Glue guide - the Pitfalls and Tips

Although I wrote as a handy guide for the shop, as people always ask, I though some of you might pick up some tips from it as well ;)

Any comment welcome... There could be some (deliberate  ) mistakes in there, and there's always room for improvement

That's a good guide Alex.

One point I'd differ on is the amount of glue used. I use half or maybe even less than in your pictures. As long as it is spread quite quickly and with a light hand it does not bobble up and it dries in a minute or less. I find if I use as much glue as you have then ridges show through the rubber. I think I can see them through the red mk V.

Because I use so little glue I run out of applicatiors before I run out of glue, so I cut a washing-up sponge into about 10 little rectangles and use those (clip not needed). It works fine.

Very important to only use the applicator once, and better to use one for each bat face and one for each rubber. As we can buy about 12 sponges to cut into 10 = 120 for about a £1 over here, that's no hardship.

Thanks so_devo!

The picture of the wet rubber sheet looks worse than what it actually was... the picture seems to emphasise the level of the glue. But Yes I take your point, and I also do try and minimise how much glue I put on there... and it's not always exactly the same, but this glue is quite forgiving and dries quite flush, where as other I've tried do not (eg DHS)... I've not really seen a rubber where the ridges were noticable with the Donic glue.

I've found the weather makes quite a difference too... on warm dry days you need to apply more as it dry as soon as you apply it, giving little chance to spread it.

Nice job Haggisv!! Very detailed instructions. I use about the same amount of glue as you have pictured. Used to start with less, but it wouldn't cover whole area, so would add more. Now I just start out with that much. To get the lines out of the glue I just keep going over with sponge until it is smooth (if I don't do this there are lines on rubber visible only at an angle). These lines may not hurt a thing, but I try to get it as smooth as possible anyway ( I should mention that I have only used Butterfly Free Chack).

The only thing I do different when putting rubber on blade is I place the bottom of rubber at top of handle (as you did) then use roller from there (holding top of rubber with left hand and rolling with right) to make sure there are no air bubbles. Though, you have probably glue far more rubbers than I have so your way may be better after all.

As far as cutting with a blade instead of scissors, I do this as well with inverted and use this to bear down on http://www.megaspin.net/store/default.a ... ting-board it is a cutting board that spins and has a little ridge for the handle to fit into so blade face sits flat while putting pressure.

Nice job for sure. I could have used this when I first started gluing since I messed up the first few times. Practice makes perfect :) .

Thanks Dawg15!

Interesting about the cutting board (I embedded the picture in your post so that every could see your good tip ;) ), I had not seen that before!

i will be 'heretic' to say, that I personally don't like the idea of applying water glue on the blade. the reason is in fact visible: water from glue soaks in wood and turns into moist in blade (unless blade surface is sealed with something that is water resistant, but this is not common case)

tipically, it will take some days for water to vapor out of blade, and i believe this is what some players describe as dead feeling during first days of use after glueing - of course, it will be visible only depending on rubber characteristics

i use dandoy water glue, which doesn't need to be applied to the blade (nor is recommended). usually one layer on sponge is enough, in some cases of doming it takes two. only if rubber is heavily domed then glue should be applied to the blade (then one layer on each side will suffice)

the reason i like to use dandoy is because i frequently EJ, and dandoy glue is joy to peel of blade and sponge too - easily and quickly done with fingers only!

limitation was when i tried to glue tenergy for a player from team. it just didn't work, the bond with sponge was too weak. but with chinese rubber i use, no least problem

and to tell the truth, by applying one layer on sponge only i save on glue

Fair enough, but the amount of glue applied is so little and it dries so quickly, I doubt it would have any impact on the blade at all. I've certainly never noticed any effect at all, neither after application, during play or after removal.

some players described changes in play during first days that could be easily explained with moisture in blade. i think it is noticeable only on some rubbers (namely, dead type sponge inverted)

and it is confusing why dandoy glue instructions text doesn't recommend applying it on a blade, if amount of water is insignificant? this glue is no significantly different to other water glues (for example, haifu water glue seems even more moist than dandoy)

of course, i don't think it can harm the blade, at most, it will change characteristic for couple of days after gluing

but my logic is, why doing something if it is not necessary? i didn't find necessary to apply the glue on blade, since adhesion is good enough for the purpose (in fact, when removing rubber, glue stays mostly on blade side, proving that applying glue on blade was not necessary) - therefore i don't do it

just don't think that i advertise dandoy, in fact i don't buy rubbers from them anymore
