Recently, the entry form for the 48th Annual St. Joseph Valley Open came out, and they've done something pretty interesting with the rating cutoff for events. On the entry form, it says that 50% of all players are between 1400 and 2000, so they've tried to cater to the largest group of players with the most events.

I've never seen the rating limits for some of the events be so close. You're going to basically have the same set of players entering all of these:
U-1775, U-1800, U-1900, U-1950, U-2000

Yes, they have events with rating limits that are only 25 points apart, and more only 50 points apart. I'm wondering how players will handle this. Will they take advantage and enter all of the events, or will they view it as too much, and only enter half of them? What would you guys do if you were entering?

I will be entering U-2000, U-2100, U-2550 and Over-40. I hope to see some of you guys there!

Been having some shoulder trouble this past year. But it's been feeling better this past month. I hope to do better now. Was rushing it before.

Wow Joe, that's a lot of action! Maybe we'll be able to have that rubber match that we've been hoping for in U-2000 or O-40!

I think those cutoffs are way too close...

That's pretty smart marketing! In essence, it's trying to give most players two chances to win the same event of the tournament...

It's March 10-11, it would be great to see you!

I understand what they're trying to do. They're trying to make it really attractive for the majority of tournament players to show up by giving a ton of possible events they can enter, and then once they do show up, get them to increase the number of events that they enter to make more money. The thing is, a lot of people I know don't want to over-play and get themselves so tired that their performance suffers. I think that at some point we've probably all over-committed to the number of events that we play in a tournament and understand that. In this case, I could play four events on Saturday if I really wanted to, but I've learned my lesson and am only going to do three. It will be interesting to see if it increases the number of players entered, as well as the number of events they enter.

Faced with a similar situation I would play the 2 lowest events to my rating, assuming a round robin format that advanced the top 2 (most common near me). I do not do well with too many matches. I like to play 10 matches or so assuming I am going against similar level players. The only exception would be if I had a significant distance to travel and may adjust based on either getting home at a reasonable hour or getting up at a reasonable hour.

I have never seen such a tournament!

Only the winner of each round robin advances, not the top two.

I wondered the same thing about the rating differences at the levels under 1800. They have 100 point differences at, for example, U-1475, U-1575, etc. Maybe they just ran out of table availability and had to make a call based on past entry numbers, or that those lower players wanted more chances at pulling off upsets to increase their ratings.
