But fortunately, because more Dandy players are playing Vets tourney's, there are less "ring-ins" now. Here's an interesting point though. A couple of our players that played Vets yesterday were very underrated due to the fact they have only played Senior tourney's in the past. Their ratings for these Senior tourney's was about right, yet at Vets, see them about 200 points less than what they should really be. Shows how silly our system is IMO.

The question is when did they play the senior tournaments! until this last month there were continuous penalties for being "inactive" it only takes 12 months to go from a 1200 point player to 1000. Senior tournament only points are slightly less than pennant or vets points because you have rapidly improving and constantly underrated kids making up 80% of the senior tournament entries.

The different in rating between a Vets divisional player and a pennant player is about nothing. Senior only players are maybe 50-100 points under a Vets divisional or pennant player and the JNRs are typically 200 points down on the standard they are currently at.

So long as you are also playing pennant everything works out fairly smoothly. Pennants with rating calculations are the great equaliser, not having that in a club breaks the system in a lot of ways. If I were the boss I'd rule with an iron fist and just exclude players from any club that doesn't enter the pennant results from playing tournaments, that would sort them out pretty quick smart :p

I think we have spoken of this before but there are some weaknesses in the system concerning the way Vets are rated. The issues usually concern those who play only in Vets events and nothing else. They play in a small pool, keep accumulating points and eventually become seriously overrated. I'm not sure of a remedy for this but personally I think there should be no weighting for tournaments - both pennant and tournament matches should be rated equally.

I'd agree with having no weighting too. And I'd like to see all clubs have to submit pennant results too. Trouble is, when a club's management committee doesn't even follow the incorporations law properly (and don't get penalised) how can TTV make them follow their rules. I guess excluding their players from tournaments is a way of protecting other players who's clubs do the right thing, but its not the players of the uncooperative clubs fault, so why should they get the penalty? This entire problem ultimately comes down to one person who is virtually untouchable in it all and may not even realise the problem he causes I think (and certainly doesn't care)!

I found out tonight that Jim Kilderry won the over 60's and was runner-up (to BB) in the over 50's. His victims included Phil W, Wayne G, and Mick W - Vic ranked 20,12, and 10 respectively. Not bad for a 70 year old!

In the over 40s Kouros beat BB in the final. I think a Japanese lady chopper won the over 40s womens. Some guy Gavin from Wagga apparently beat Lawrence L in the final of section 2. That's all I heard.

Pretty sure I heard this bloke Gavin knocked CA out of his glorious run though Div 2, Gavin was on 900 points (interstate dodgy ones it seems). The Japan chopper lady is just about impossible to beat in the Womens O40, she's very good. That is indeed impressive for a 70 year to beat all those great players! I don't think I saw him play, I'll try and find him and pay some attention to how he does this next time. I didn't imagine Kouros would beat BB too often?

I saw Kouros with the trophy. He was gleaming.

I saw Jim Kilderry playing doubles. I think Michael Ede was his partner. He was playing against Mick Wright and I forget who his partner was. I didn't watch a lot of it, but Mick Wright looked very tricky! Jim K must have been relishing his own glory of the newspaper article and it went to his game (and not to his head :P ) LOL

Last night I was talking to Abdul, one of the Section 2 players at Coburg. He told me that in the first round of the Vic Open Over 40s last Sunday he was 10-8 up in the 5th against Kouros. Kouros then got an unreturnable edge and went on to win the match and the event. How fine the line between success and failure can be sometimes...

A good match by anyone's standard, then.

But not a match I'd want to remember as a player. |-) |-) |-)
