Anybody here going to the event in Rockford this upcoming weekend? It's always a really fun event, play Saturday and Sunday pretty much all day long.

Thanks! You must have seen some of my later matches. I was absolutely horrible in my first few matches, and then was playing great in the second half of the day. First four matches, went 0-4, only winning one game. Last three matches, went 3-0, winning all of them 3-0! Can't wait to play this weekend and hopefully keep the good momentum going.

I'm playing with Freddy (Matt, you probably know him, he played in Shorewood and New Berlin) and two guys from Illinois, Arcot and Omprakash. I think we'll probably be seeded into Group C, hopefully we can move up in the qualifying rounds.

It's one of my favorite tournaments, I love the team format. :)

Hey Doug, good luck at the tourney. You got a nice team there, all solid 1900+ guys. Hope your new Neubauer pips are working for you.
I have not played so much lately since I now live over 20 miles away from the next club; I have been doing a lot of mountainbiking and hiking instead.

Had another great time at the tournament this weekend. Although my personal results weren't what I was hoping they'd be, our team did finish tied for third in Division C, which is a solid accomplishment.
For the second time at this tournament, I lost a TON of close matches that would have turned a mediocre performance into a great one. Overall I went 4-10, with the 4 wins against lower rated players and the 10 losses against higher rated players. I lost so many two point games. One match was 12-10, 12-10, 11-9. One match 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. Another, against a player who is just under 2100, was 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 6-11. The most frustrating loss was maybe today. I played a really good long pips blocker in maybe the most grueling match I've ever had. Every point was a long, tough affair. In the end, I lost 18-16 in the fifth game. What a crazy game that was. I was up 6-0. Then he was up 10-8. Then I got it to deuce and fought off a number of match points. I finally got a couple of match points that I couldn't convert, then he finally forced me to push into the net for the loss.
All in all, I need to remember that all of these really close losses were against higher rated guys, which means that I'm close to maybe putting it together. I learned that I need to back off the table a little bit; playing close to the table just doesn't suit me well. I learned that I need to work on ball control, both on my own shots and when trying to handle the loops from 2000 rated players. Again, I think backing off the table a little will give me a little extra time. And third, I need to be a little more aggressive in looking to hit with my long pips. They don't force a lot of errors from the really good players, but when I use them to hit with, they are a force, and I just didn't do enough of that.

It was nice meeting you there. LP blocker? Seemiller grip with Red LP on FH? He's a tough match.

I ended up playing in literally the last match in the building, which I had to win to force them to use their tiebreaker rules for Division 4, otherwise I'd have defaulted to save the knees and ankles, but it would have hurt everyone on the team if I had, so I played it.

Overall, I had a good tournament, but it will be a week to recover, I'm guessing. One of these days we'll get to play somewhere.

Bob

Yes, that's the guy. He uses Grass D Tec S. Seems to be able to block just about anything. I was so completely worn out physically and mentally after that match.

It was nice to meet you there too! One of these days we'll need to have a hit. Sounds like you had a long day there. I was out of the building around 2:30 on Sunday, much earlier than past years. I think there was one less round in my division this year, so we got done faster. With the extra team in your division, I imagine you were a lot later.

Yup, it was 6 pm on the nose when they finished taking pictures, etc.

The games I win off your blocker are by chopping low and wide so he can't attack, and then hitting early and hard to as far away from him as possible so he can't get there quick enough to block it. I've never won a match off him, but that's how I've won games when my forehand is working.

I went 13 and 3, with one of the losses to a guy that was 2290. I won a game off him and boy was he upset with himself. I looked on the sheets and I don't think he lost any other games, even. It wasn't bad, but I don't think I gained many points. Very sore and tired today, still.

Wow, that's a great performance you had, you should be very happy about that! I was still pretty tired yesterday, I'm probably not going to play again until this weekend.

It was a pretty good showing considering, but there was one match I needed to win that I didn't. This was only my 4th or 5th tournament, but I think I'm learning that if you don't win outright, its not uncommon to have a loss that costs a lot of your gains. It always seems to come down to that for me. I lost one in 5 to a player 50 points lower, so that hurt my numbers significantly. Of course, looking at it from that view, there were a few players I did the same thing to.

Anyway, I did pretty well, the rating calculator said I'll be up over 50 points, and I'm healing. A little less sore today, and hope to be back to normal by next week. Not sure when I'll be able to play another tournament. It was an expensive weekend for me, and basically blew out my ping pong budget for the year. That was why I really wanted to play that Milwaukee Teams one so bad. But I was just too hurt to play, then.

We are planning on holding that team one again next year. Maybe you could make it to the Badger Open, that's the 4 star tournament that we hold on the third weekend in September. It's always a popular event because the venue is good. And, this year, every event will offer cash prizes for first place!

I played the Badger open last year, but didn't beat the top seed, and didn't advance. I agree it was a good tournament, even if i didn't do as well as hoped. Trying to beat someone 150 points above you, whose rating is down 200 points from where it was, is a tall order.

I pretty much spent my budget for the year by playing Rockford, so not sure if I'll be able to play anymore tournaments this year. Obviously, the lower cost ones are the ones I need to be playing, if I can, but I was just too crippled to play the Milwaukee teams one, and had to withdraw. I could have played 3 of those for what it cost to play Rockford, but its just not normally an option. LOL, I think you should do it TWO or THREE times a year.

Yeah, Rockford is expensive, at least you get to have a lot of matches, and the camaraderie of the team event makes it extra special.
